By default, the native app Telephone (Phone) your iPhone can send a standard greeting message to calls you don’t answer, using the feature called Voicemail.
However, it is fully possible to change this greeting to a voice message that you prefer — with your voice, instead of the default one provided by Apple. See how to change that!
How to use Live Voicemail on iPhone
Please note that this depends on the cell phone provider you use. In our tests, the tutorial worked well on the Vivo operator.
Open the Phone app and tap the “Voicemail” tab. Then select “Greeting” (in the top right corner).
Choose “Custom” and then “Record” to start recording the message itself.

- What tips can users follow to ensure their voicemail recordings sound clear and professional?
**Interview with Tech Expert Sarah Jennings on Customizing Voicemail Greetings on iPhone**
**Editor:** Welcome, Sarah! Today, we’re discussing a feature that many iPhone users might not be aware of—customizing voicemail greetings. Can you tell us a bit about this feature and why it might be beneficial for users?
**Sarah Jennings:** Thank you for having me! Yes, the voicemail feature on the iPhone defaults to a standard greeting, but the option to personalize it with your own voice can really enhance the way you communicate with callers. It adds a personal touch and can be especially useful for businesses or individuals who want to convey warmth and approachability.
**Editor:** That’s interesting! What are the steps users need to follow to change their voicemail greeting?
**Sarah Jennings:** Changing your voicemail greeting is quite simple. First, you need to open the Phone app and navigate to the ”Voicemail” tab at the bottom right. From there, tap “Greeting” in the upper left corner. You will have the option to record a new greeting or choose a default one. After recording, just save the changes, and your custom greeting will be active for incoming calls.
**Editor:** And are there any tips for making a recording that sounds great?
**Sarah Jennings:** Absolutely! When recording your greeting, make sure you’re in a quiet environment to avoid background noise. Speak clearly and at a comfortable pace. It’s a good idea to rehearse what you want to say before hitting the record button. Keep it friendly and straightforward, so callers know they’ve reached the right person.
**Editor:** That sounds great! Some users might feel unsure about their voice—any advice for them?
**Sarah Jennings:** It’s completely normal to feel that way! Remember, this greeting is for your callers, not a professional recording. Just being genuine and authentic will resonate more than trying to sound like someone else. Trust me, your friends and family will appreciate hearing your voice!
**Editor:** Thanks, Sarah! Before we wrap up, is there anything else you want to share about iPhone voicemail features?
**Sarah Jennings:** Yes! With the new “Live Voicemail” feature that was introduced in iOS 17, you can see transcripts of messages as they are being left, which is a game changer for those who want to screen calls more effectively. These modern features really help personalize and enhance the calling experience on iPhones.
**Editor:** Fantastic insights, Sarah! Thank you for joining us today and shedding light on how users can make their voicemail greetings uniquely theirs.
**Sarah Jennings:** Thank you for having me! Happy customizing!
