Starting us off is Leau Du Sud. This horse was a no-show last time out, but I’m hoping he’s just being dramatic. Much like your mate who always says he’s going to “hit the gym” but then winds up at the pub. If he shows up muddy and ready to run, he has every chance to snatch victory from the jaws of mediocrity.
Protektorat – The Class Act
Next up, the big betting race of the day – the Paddy Power Gold Cup! Here’s where we roll with Protektorat. If he jumps like my nerves before a first date, we might actually be in for a winning ride! He’s had a long break, but who doesn’t need a holiday? Just remember that if he falters, it’s on you – don’t blame the horse!
Gowel Road – Each-Way Wonders
For the handicap hurdle, Gowel Road has been reported to have a solid each-way chance. ITV Racing returns Saturday for racing from Cheltenham and Newcastle, starting with an exhilarating Grade 2 novices’ chase over 2 miles. LEAU DU SUD was recently a non-runner on good ground, yet all indicators suggest a preference for softer conditions. If he makes it to the track, this horse trained by Harry and Dan Skelton should emerge as a formidable contender.
There’s potential for an exciting battle for the lead between my selection and Lookaway. With a current rating of 148, Leau du Sud is expected to demonstrate superior skill, having jumped impressively during his last outing at Stratford, despite making one significant error. He is also known for his stamina.
The highlight of the day is undoubtedly the prestigious Paddy Power Gold Cup Handicap Chase over a distance of 2m4f. Anticipate a fast pace as Ginny’s Destiny poses a serious threat, potentially making it hard for the competition to catch up. Last year’s champion Ga Law may also find his footing again, replicating last season’s strong performance.
However, I’m placing my bets on the talented PROTEKTORAT, who was particularly impressive when clinching victory in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham last March. Provided he’s fit after a lengthy 218-day hiatus, he’s expected to jump effortlessly and travel well. This renewal may not boast the fiercest competition we’ve seen.
Despite the challenge of carrying 12st, the ground condition won’t be a disadvantage. In the 2021 race, he placed second on good ground with a rating of 154. Though he now faces tougher odds with a mark of 167, his class shines through when he’s at his best. I plan to place a fair wager on him each-way.
This event features a competitive handicap hurdle over a distance of 3 miles. Despite his higher weight of 143, I’m confident GOWEL ROAD presents a reasonable each-way opportunity after recently ascending 2lbs due to his last defeat. He finished sixth in the final of this event at Cheltenham in March, and the current good ground may facilitate his climb up the hill, especially as he encountered fatigue in his previous race.
On the Flat circuit, we have the Listed Churchill Stakes over 1m2f, shaping up to be a highly competitive race. Dubai Honour might have to concede weight, but I’m leaning towards backing THE FOXES each-way. He is a stamina-oriented horse who previously finished fifth in the Derby and recently delivered a commendable third against strong competitors Enemy and Military Order at Southwell.
In the handicap hurdle spanning 2m5f, WYENOT is a promising young horse who seems to favor the increased distance. This race marks her longest yet. She previously led over a shorter distance at this track and has received a 6lb penalty for that victory. Though the added weight presents additional challenge, she retains excellent form and may be difficult to overtake.
The Listed Golden Rose Stakes over 6f presents a challenging call, as ANNAF appears to possess the talent necessary to excel among this field, despite a recent dip in performance. Under the training of Mick Appleby, this horse showcased significant prowess earlier this year with a victory in Riyadh, although his recent efforts have been more subdued.
