Institutional Access
Numerous users gain access to content on Oxford Academic through institutional subscriptions and purchases. If you are affiliated with an institution that maintains an active account, you may have the opportunity to access content in one of the following manners:
IP Based Access
Generally, access is provided across an institutional network that encompasses a variety of IP addresses. This form of authentication is conducted automatically, meaning it is not feasible to log out of an IP-authenticated account once logged in.
Sign In Through Your Institution
Opt for this pathway for remote access while outside of your institution’s premises. Advanced Shibboleth/Open Athens technology facilitates single sign-on between your institution’s digital platform and Oxford Academic, streamlining the authentication process.
- Click on the option labeled Sign in through your institution.
- Select your institution from the provided list, which will redirect you to your institution’s dedicated website for sign-in.
- Once on the institution’s site, please utilize the credentials issued by your institution. Avoid logging in with an Oxford Academic personal account.
- Upon successful sign-in, you will be redirected back to Oxford Academic.
If your institution is not available on the list or if you are unable to sign in to your institution’s website, kindly reach out to your librarian or administrator for assistance.
Sign In With a Library Card
For those availing library services, entering your library card number will grant you access. Should you experience issues while signing in, please do not hesitate to contact your librarian for support.

What are the different ways users can access content on Oxford Academic?
**Interview: Understanding Access to Oxford Academic Content**
**Editor:** Today, we’re joined by Sarah Johnson, an academic librarian with extensive experience in managing institutional subscriptions and user access. Sarah, thank you for joining us.
**Sarah:** Thank you for having me!
**Editor:** Let’s start with the basics. How do users typically gain access to content on Oxford Academic?
**Sarah:** Users generally gain access through institutional subscriptions. Many academic institutions have active accounts with Oxford Academic, allowing their affiliated users to access content either through IP-based access or by signing in through their institution.
**Editor:** Could you explain IP-Based Access a bit more for our listeners?
**Sarah:** Sure! IP-Based Access is quite straightforward. If you’re on your institution’s network, you’ll automatically be authenticated based on the IP addresses they’ve registered. This means you won’t need to log in manually, as the system recognizes you’re part of that network.
**Editor:** That sounds convenient! But what if someone is trying to access content remotely?
**Sarah:** For those who are off-campus, the “Sign In Through Your Institution” option is key. This utilizes technologies like Shibboleth or Open Athens for a single sign-on experience. Users just need to select their institution, log in with their institutional credentials, and they’ll be redirected back to Oxford Academic.
**Editor:** And what if a user’s institution doesn’t appear on the list?
**Sarah:** If that happens, I encourage users to reach out to their librarian or someone within their institution’s IT department. They can often assist with access issues or provide guidance.
**Editor:** Additionally, you mentioned signing in with a library card—how does that work?
**Sarah:** Exactly! Those who utilize library services can simply input their library card number on the Oxford Academic site to access content. If they experience any issues during this process, it’s advisable to consult their librarian for help.
**Editor:** Now, turning to society members—how does access work for them?
**Sarah:** Society members typically have access through a similar concept of single sign-on. They can use the “Sign In Through Society Site” option, log in with their society credentials, and once authenticated, they’ll be redirected back to Oxford Academic.
**Editor:** If someone is a society member but does not have the required credentials, what should they do?
**Sarah:** In that case, they should contact their society directly for assistance in retrieving their login details. Most societies have support staff dedicated to helping their members.
**Editor:** Great insights, Sarah. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us today!
**Sarah:** Thank you for having me! I hope this information helps users navigate their access to Oxford Academic more effectively.
