Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – There is something interesting about Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s visit to Indonesia. The man who has assets of US$125.9 trillion or around Rp. 2,005 trillion took the time to taste typical Indonesian culinary delights.
For the first time, Jensen enjoyed the legendary street dish gulai bend (gultik) in Blok M, South Jakarta. He was accompanied by Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) CEO Vikram Sinha and journalist Najwa Shihab.
As seen from the video uploaded by Najwa on her personal Instagram account, Jensen was wearing a plain t-shirt and black trousers. Najwa first said that she used to go to school in the Blok M area.
Najwa said she often hangs out and eats gultik, because it tastes good and the price is cheap.
Jensen then said, “the aroma is very good”.
After being explained that gultik is a food made from meat that is covered in a thick sauce rich in spices, Jensen couldn’t wait to try it.
Jensen’s expression looked enthusiastic when he tasted Gultik. “This is so amazing,” Huang said with wide eyes.
Najwa, Vikram, and Jensen then sat on a few chairs and tables, like the general public eating gultik in Blok M.
Najwa asked if gultik was too spicy for Jensen. Initially, the Rp. 2,005 trillion man refused. However, in the end he was sweating so hot, then Najwa handed him a tissue.
The three of them looked friendly chatting while enjoying gultik on a sunny day. Separately, Vikram also shared this moment on his personal Instagram account.
“Enjoying Indonesian street food, gultik, while discussing the future of AI technology in Indonesia with Jensen Huang and Najwa Shihab,” said Vikram.
“This conversation made me inspired by the potential of AI to open up unlimited opportunities for the country’s future,” he added.
For information, Jensen’s arrival in Indonesia was to take part in the Indonesia AI Day 2024 event which was held by IOH at The Tribrata, last Thursday (14/11).
On that occasion, Jensen stated the importance of adopting AI to maximize one’s potential and boost innovation. He also sat on a panel together with BUMN Minister Erick Thohir and GoTo CEO Patrick Walujo.

Nvidia’s Jensen Huang: From AI to Gultik, Who Knew Tech CEOs Could Devour Street Food?
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Who would’ve thought that a man with a net worth of a staggering US $125.9 trillion would indulge in the delightful flavors of Indonesian street food? Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, might be revolutionizing AI, but it seems he’s also embracing some culinary adventures during his visit to Indonesia.
On his first visit, Jens—the man who could probably buy a small country or two—decided to treat himself to the culinary marvel known as gulai bend, or gultik. Yes, gultik! Because who needs Michelin stars when you can sip spices off the street? He made this epic journey to Blok M, South Jakarta, not alone, of course! He was accompanied by his buddy Vikram Sinha, CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and the intriguing journalist, Najwa Shihab. Let’s be honest; the real affluence is the company you keep, right?
Now, Jensen didn’t roll up in a suit polished to perfection. Oh no! He was dressed down in a plain t-shirt and black trousers, probably to blend in with the cool kids—because who doesn’t want to look casual while tasting food that’s probably on par with an art installation?
Najwa, in a stroke of nostalgia, mentioned her fond days in Blok M where gultik was a staple for her, blending memories and flavors with giddy excitement. She opened the conversation about gultik, describing it as “delicious” and “affordable.” Talk about the complete package! I mean, it’s the culinary version of a five-star hotel on a backpacker’s budget!
When Jensen caught a whiff of gultik, he didn’t hold back: “The aroma is very good.” Who knew he could be so eloquent over a bowl of meat slathered in spices? But once that gultik hit his palate, he was all in: “This is so amazing!” he exclaimed, eyes widening in delight. Honestly, with a wealth that could orbit the earth a few times, it’s refreshing to see someone so excited about food that costs less than his morning coffee.
But hold your horses! The real twist came next. Najwa, ever the tactician, asked if the gultik was too spicy for our billionaire chef. At first, he held his ground, denying any heat intensity. But soon enough, reality hit him like a ton of bricks, as beads of sweat began to form on his forehead. Looks like even tech titans have their limits! Thankfully, Najwa came to the rescue with a tissue—because what’s more precious than a tissue in your moment of spicy crisis?
The trio sat together like old friends, chatting amicably, a heartwarming image that would make you forget about the corporate ladder for a moment. Vikram even shared a cheeky Insta post about their tasty gultik session, mixing business with pleasure as they discussed the future of AI and gultik.
Jensen’s Indonesian adventure wasn’t purely about spice and sweat, of course. His visit was tied to the Indonesia AI Day 2024 event, where he professed his belief in the power of AI for unleashing potential and innovation. A man wise enough to taste delicious street food and articulate the merits of AI in one fell swoop—now that’s a talent! He even joined a panel with dignitaries like BUMN Minister Erick Thohir and GoTo CEO Patrick Walujo. Talk about taking executive dining to the next level!
Who knew that behind the CEO façade was a man who could appreciate a good bowl of gultik, creating a bridge between technology and traditional cuisine? But perhaps we should consider this: If Jensen Huang can gorge on spicy street food while planning the technological future of Indonesia, should we be on the lookout for a new trend? Tech CEOs participating in extreme culinary challenges? Next, I expect to see him bungee jumping while discussing quantum computing!
In any case, here’s hoping that gultik becomes a staple at board meetings. A little spice can certainly keep the brainstorming sessions fiery—just be ready with those tissues!
