Todd Haynes to Lead Jury at 75th Berlin International Film Festival

This event marks a significant transition, as it will be the first Berlinale under the leadership of Tricia Tuttle, the newly appointed head who previously directed the BFI London Film Festival. She takes over the reins from the long-serving artistic and executive directors, Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek, who have adeptly co-led the festival since 2020.

In expressing her enthusiasm, Tuttle praised Haynes as “a dazzlingly gifted writer and director with an impressive range.” She emphasized that his body of work showcases remarkable stylistic versatility while maintaining an unmistakably personal touch that defines his filmmaking vision.

Reflecting on his journey, Tuttle noted, “Ever since his debut feature Poison won the Teddy Award in 1991, the Berlinale has closely followed and embraced his unique filmmaking style and storytelling prowess.”

With an impressive filmography that spans nearly three decades, Haynes has directed ten feature films, including the groundbreaking 1998 film Velvet Goldmine, the acclaimed Oscar-nominated drama Far From Heaven released in 2002, the 2007 biographical film I’m Not There that explores the life of Bob Dylan, the critically acclaimed 2015 romantic drama Carol, and the recent 2023 Netflix release, May December.

In a glowing statement, the Berlinale underscored Haynes’ lasting impact on the film industry, noting, “Over nearly 40 years, Todd Haynes has been one of the most bold and distinctive filmmaking voices in US-American cinema.” His work is particularly celebrated for its profound sensitivity in exploring the intricate inner lives of outsiders and women, as well as his compelling investigations into themes of gender and identity.

Highlighting his artistic prowess, the statement further remarked, “His skill at creating complex characters has attracted many of the world’s finest actors,” indicating the stellar ensemble that includes renowned stars like Julianne Moore, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Natalie Portman, Mark Ruffalo, Christian Bale, and Ewan McGregor, all of whom have wonderfully portrayed multi-faceted roles in his films. Todd Haynes’ films and their actors have garnered prestigious accolades at numerous international film festivals, a testament to his exceptional storytelling abilities.

Recently, Haynes garnered media attention—not for a project he is currently directing—but rather for a queer romance drama he was set to work on with prominent actor Joaquin Phoenix. However, just five days before production was due to commence, Phoenix withdrew from the project, leaving many eager for future news.

The 2024 Berlinale jury was headed by Lupita Nyong’o, with the coveted Golden Bear awarded to Mati Diop’s striking film Dahomey.

The 2025 Berlinale runs from 13-23 February.
