The inaugural forum, themed “Development and Revitalization: A New Journey for the Global South,” ran from November 11-12 and drew an impressive attendance of nearly 350 delegates representing 170 diverse media outlets, esteemed think tanks, government agencies, and innovative companies from over 70 countries and regions worldwide. Some of the event’s standout moments included heartfelt congratulatory messages delivered by renowned leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who emphasized the importance of collaboration in the Global South.
The Global South Media News Network made its official debut and commenced operations during the forum’s opening ceremony, signifying a monumental step in media collaboration. The newly launched portal features dedicated sections such as “South-South News,” “South-South Cooperation,” and “South-South Lecture Hall,” aiming to broadcast the latest developments from Global South countries, foster meaningful dialogue on South-South cooperation, and highlight the rich cultures and traditions of participating nations. The website, which is accessible in both Chinese and English, is thoughtfully designed to elevate the forum’s profile, stimulate broader dialogue among the Global South’s media and think tanks, and enhance news and information sharing among its members.
Cheng Manli, who serves as the Honorary Director of the Peking University Institute for International Communication Studies and attended the forum, articulated that the network’s launch seeks to unify media forces from the Global South. It aims to amplify the region’s voice, reinforce true multilateralism, advocate for an equitable and orderly multipolar world, and promote inclusive economic globalization, all while steering the international order towards greater justice and rationality.
Malam Ali Muhammad Ali, the CEO of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), remarked that the network serves as an ideal platform for Global South countries to express their views, collaborate on authentic news reporting, and significantly strengthen the Global South’s presence on the international stage, thereby fostering a more inclusive global media landscape.
The forum is supported by China’s State Council Information Office and co-hosted by the Xinhua News Agency and Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC; Brazil Communication Company). This collaborative effort seeks to establish a robust hub for people-to-people exchanges and cooperative initiatives within the Global South’s media and think tank community.
