The days when technology was strictly a support area for businesses are coming to an end. The global digitalization process, which had already been growing for years, gained strength and agility during the period of the Covid-19 pandemic, when remote work became an alternative for companies to hold meetings and processes remotely.
Controlling machines remotely, deliveries stored in the cloud, data security systems, blockchain technology and, more recently, the presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially on social networks, have shown the strength of information technology in the job market. All combined with the 5G network which, according to GSMA Intelligence projections, promises be half of global mobile connections by 2030.
“Additionally, there is an increase in investments, both by private companies and the government, in digital infrastructure and professional training in technology, which directly contributes to strengthening the sector”, adds Cristina Boner, businesswoman and technology professional.
According to research carried out by Advanced Consultingreported by the Insper portal, the Information Technology (IT) market closed the second quarter of 2024 with 22% growth, following the numbers of recent years; in 2023 the IT sector grew 21% and in 2022, 22%.
“With digital transformation on the rise, companies are realizing that technology is no longer a support area, but rather a strategic ally for innovation, efficiency and competitiveness. This advance also reflects the global trend of digitalization, with Brazil following and, in some cases, leading the adoption of new technologies in sectors such as e-commerce, fintechs and agribusiness”, says Boner.
The technology professional also says that another point that positively reinforced the growth of the sector was the fear of companies of experiencing hacker attacks and suffering data leaks, which generated an appreciation for professionals who can preserve this information. “IT professionals, such as developers, data analysts and cybersecurity specialists, have come to be seen as part of the strategic core of organizations,” he says.
Job market
According to a search made by the Association of Information and Communication Technology Companies and Digital Technologies (Brasscom), reported by Exame, by the year 2025 around 800 thousand job vacancies will appear in the digital sector across the country, at the same time as the deficit of professionals in Brazil should exceed half a million professionals by next year.
The body also states that, in an annual report, it was found that in December 2021, 53 thousand graduated from courses with a technological profile. Considering an average demand of 159 thousand professionals per year in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), there would be an annual deficit of 106 thousand talents.
Therefore, the segment is increasingly receptive to new professionals. For Boner, there is a shortage of qualified professionals, which opens up countless employment and growth opportunities for those who qualify now.
“IT offers a vast field of action, with areas in constant innovation, such as AI, digital security and software development. Furthermore, the number of online courses and certifications facilitates access to quality training. Anyone who invests in a career in IT today will be entering a dynamic sector with high employability, both in Brazil and in the international market”, concludes the businesswoman.

**Interview with Cristina Boner on Digital Transformation and Sustainability Goals**
**Interviewer:** Cristina, thank you for joining us today to discuss the evolving role of technology in businesses aiming for sustainability. Your insights into digital transformation are crucial as companies look for ways to enhance their operations. Can you elaborate on how technology now serves as a strategic ally rather than just a support function?
**Cristina Boner:** Absolutely! The landscape has changed dramatically. With the pace of digital transformation accelerating, especially during and after the pandemic, businesses are realizing that technologies such as AI, cloud storage, and data security tools are essential for innovation and competitiveness. This shift allows companies not only to streamline processes but also to align their operational goals with sustainability objectives, which I believe will be vital moving forward.
**Interviewer:** Interesting! You mentioned AI—how is it being utilized to help companies meet their sustainability commitments?
**Cristina Boner:** AI is a game changer. It allows organizations to monitor resource usage, predict maintenance needs, and optimize supply chains, which reduces waste and lowers costs. For instance, remote monitoring systems powered by AI can help companies track energy consumption or waste production in real-time, enabling them to make informed decisions that align with their sustainability goals.
**Interviewer:** That’s a powerful tool indeed. What trends are you seeing in terms of investments in technology that support this digital transformation?

**Cristina Boner:** Brazil is making remarkable strides in digital transformation. Sectors like e-commerce, fintechs, and agribusiness are leading the way in adopting new technologies. The country’s efforts align well with global trends, and I am optimistic that with continuous investment and commitment to technology, we can create a significant impact on sustainability initiatives.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, what should companies keep in mind as they pursue this digital transformation for sustainability?
**Cristina Boner:** Companies need to view technology as an integral part of their strategic vision, not just a support function. A robust approach to digital tools can help them not only enhance efficiency but also create innovative solutions that minimize their environmental impact. It’s about embracing change, investing in talent, and being open to new business models that put sustainability at the forefront.
