**Interview with Maria Lopez, Head of the Neuquen Department of the Environment**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Maria. The Neuquen government recently launched a public tender for the expansion of the GIRSU del Sur regional center. Can you tell us more about the importance of this project for local communities?
**Maria Lopez:** Absolutely, and thank you for having me. The GIRSU del Sur center is critical for proper waste management in our region. With the collapse of municipal landfills in places like San Martin de los Andes and Villa La Angostura, this project provides a sustainable solution for waste disposal. It aims to ensure that these municipalities, along with future developments in the south of the province, have access to effective waste management.
**Editor:** The contract for this project spans 36 months with a significant budget of P6.119 billion. How will this funding be utilized?
**Maria Lopez:** This budget will cover the expansion of the facility, enhancing its capacity to handle municipal solid waste. It will also be used to operate the center more efficiently. Our goal is not just about waste disposal but to implement best practices in waste management, which includes recycling and reducing the overall environmental impact.
**Editor:** The GIRSU del Sur center was inaugurated in 2019. What progress has been made since its opening, and how has it impacted local waste management?
**Maria Lopez:** Since its inauguration, the center has become the first sanitary landfill in Neuquen. It’s been essential in addressing the garbage crisis in our communities, allowing us to manage and dispose of waste much more effectively. The center has been instrumental in reducing illegal dumping and improving public health standards in the affected areas.
**Editor:** You mentioned that there are plans for additional regional waste treatment centers. What are the next steps for this initiative?
**Maria Lopez:** Yes, we are committed to expanding our waste management infrastructure. While Alicura is currently the only operational regional center besides the one in the city of Neuquén, we are working on developing additional facilities that will cover more areas and further integrate waste management systems across the province. This includes community education programs on waste reduction and recycling.
**Editor:** could you share how this initiative aligns with broader environmental goals in Neuquen?
**Maria Lopez:** Certainly. The integrated municipal solid waste management system is designed not only to improve waste disposal but also to enhance environmental quality and public health. By effectively managing solid waste, we aim to protect our natural resources, promote sustainability, and ultimately improve the quality of life for all our residents.
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, Maria. It’s encouraging to hear about the progress and future plans for sustainable waste management in Neuquen.
