The platforms of Meta are in the sights of Procon of São Paulo regarding advertising involving electronic cigarettes (vapes). According to Olhar Digital, the agency asked the company for more detailed information about the criteria it uses to suspend advertisements for tobacco products.

Not only that, but it also required the company to apply more rigorous methods that prevent advertisements on Facebook and Instagram from reaching the public. In general, this measure focuses on preventing the exposure of content that promotes this type of device, which has been banned for sale in Brazil since 2009.

Meta, in turn, released an official note in response to Procon’s statements and highlighted its commitment to Brazilian legislation. In this case, she stated that she prohibits advertisements that promote the use or sale of items linked to tobacco and nicotine, which includes products such as vaporizers and vapes.

**Interview with ‍João Almeida, PR Manager at Procon ⁢São Paulo**

**Editor:** Thank you ⁢for joining⁣ us today, João. Can you explain why Procon São ⁢Paulo is focusing on ⁤Meta’s advertising practices, particularly concerning⁣ vapes?

**João Almeida:** ‌Certainly.‌ Our primary concern is the health and safety of consumers, particularly minors. Despite‌ the ⁢ban on ⁤the‍ sale of electronic cigarettes in Brazil since 2009, we have observed that advertisements promoting these products still manage to reach the public through platforms like Facebook and ⁢Instagram. We are asking ‍Meta for clarification on ‍their criteria⁢ for suspending such ⁣ads and advocating for more stringent measures to protect⁤ users from harmful content.

**Editor:** Meta has‍ stated its commitment⁢ to following ⁤Brazilian laws regarding the advertising of tobacco products. How do you⁤ respond to their⁢ assurance?

**João Almeida:** While we appreciate their acknowledgment of the regulations, we believe that⁢ compliance must‍ go beyond mere statements. We expect Meta to implement proactive measures that prevent these ads from even being ‌displayed.‌ It’s crucial for social media platforms to take⁣ responsibility in safeguarding users from potentially harmful products.

**Editor:** What impact do you think limiting‌ vape advertisements‍ could ⁢have on public perception and usage of these products?

**João Almeida:** Restricting these advertisements may lead to a decrease in⁤ public exposure ‍and subsequently reduce interest, particularly among younger audiences. We want to foster‍ an environment where ⁤users are educated about the risks associated with vaping, rather than ‍being drawn in by ‌appealing marketing ⁤tactics.

**Editor:**‌ This issue raises an ‍important question for our readers: Do you believe social media platforms like Meta have a⁢ responsibility to regulate‌ the types of ads that appear on their sites, particularly⁢ when it comes to health-related issues? How should they ⁢balance ⁤user freedom and public safety? Let’s hear your thoughts!
