**Interview with Dr. Fatima Al-Hassan, Middle East Affairs Expert**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Al-Hassan. We’re discussing the recent meeting between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the leaders of the UAE, and the Sheikh of Al-Azhar, which took place during COP29 in Baku. What significance do you see in this meeting?
**Dr. Al-Hassan:** Thank you for having me. This meeting is quite significant as it underscores the commitment of both leaders to addressing global issues through dialogue and collaboration. The presence of leaders from different spheres—political and religious—at such a major international event highlights the importance of interfaith dialogue in tackling pressing global challenges, including climate change.
**Editor:** Indeed, the intersection of politics and religion can be powerful. How do you think their discussions might influence climate change initiatives in the Middle East?
**Dr. Al-Hassan:** Their meeting is pivotal because it encourages a broader acceptance of climate change initiatives within the Islamic community. The Sheikh of Al-Azhar has considerable influence, and his support can galvanize grassroots efforts, mobilizing communities to engage in sustainable practices. This partnership could also foster a more unified voice advocating for environmental stewardship that resonates with the region’s values.
**Editor:** Given the cultural and religious dynamics at play, what challenges do you think they’ll face in promoting these initiatives?
**Dr. Al-Hassan:** Challenges include varying levels of engagement and resource availability across different countries in the region. Additionally, there may be resistance from those who prioritize economic growth over environmental concerns. However, if the leaders can frame climate action within the context of social justice and community welfare, they may find broader acceptance.
**Editor:** That’s an insightful perspective. Lastly, how do you view the role of COP29 in facilitating such high-level meetings?
**Dr. Al-Hassan:** COP29 serves as a crucial platform for global leaders to address not just environmental issues but also to engage in diplomatic relations. It is an opportunity for them to forge alliances and take collective action. Meetings like the one between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed and the Sheikh of Al-Azhar can potentially set the stage for collaborative frameworks that extend beyond climate initiatives into socio-economic development as well.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Al-Hassan, for your insights. It will be interesting to see how this meeting progresses towards actionable commitments.
**Dr. Al-Hassan:** Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to discuss these crucial topics.
