The Turkish minister said during an interview with TV Net, “Türkiye has received an offer to become a partner country in the BRICS group, and this is a transitional process.”
He added that joining the group would bring benefits to Türkiye, as it would allow cooperation with all the most important global platforms.
At the beginning of this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated that Moscow welcomes Ankara’s interest in rapprochement with BRICS, but the decision on the criteria for Ankara’s participation in the group’s activities will be taken on the basis of the consensus of its members.
He added that Russia supports expanding BRICS relations with the global majority countries, primarily with countries that support multilateralism, pursue a sovereign foreign policy and do not join unilateral sanctions.
“BRICS” is a political and economic group that began negotiations to form it in 2006, and held its first summit in 2009. The group included Brazil, Russia, India, and China under the name “BRIC,” then South Africa joined it in 2011 to become “BRICS.”
Egypt, the Emirates, Iran, and Ethiopia joined the group in 2024, while Saudi Arabia has the status of an invited country. Dozens of countries, including Turkey, Venezuela, Vietnam, and others, have also expressed their intention to join BRICS.
The group is working to form a multipolar international political and economic system, as the area of its countries constitutes a quarter of the landmass, its population is 40% of the Earth’s population, and it occupies 40% of the global output.
Russia holds the presidency of the BRICS group this year, and last month a summit of the group was held in the Russian city of Kazan, in which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also participated, expressing his country’s desire to expand relations with the BRICS group.

**Interview with Dr. Aylin Duran, International Relations Expert**
**Editor:** Welcome, Dr. Duran. The Turkish minister recently announced that Türkiye has received an offer to become a partner country in the BRICS group. What do you make of this development?
**Dr. Duran:** Thank you for having me. This is a significant announcement for Türkiye. BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is a major player in global economic and political landscapes. Being offered partnership indicates Türkiye’s growing geopolitical relevance and its ambition to expand its influence.
**Editor:** The minister referred to this as a “transitional process.” What does that imply for Türkiye’s future relationship with BRICS?
**Dr. Duran:** The term “transitional process” suggests that there will be steps towards deeper engagement. It may involve negotiations regarding Türkiye’s role, responsibilities, and potential contributions to the group. This could also reflect Türkiye’s desire to balance its international alliances, especially amid shifting global dynamics.
**Editor:** How might Türkiye’s involvement in BRICS impact its foreign policy?
**Dr. Duran:** Joining BRICS could lead to a shift in Türkiye’s foreign policy, emphasizing economic partnerships with emerging economies. It may also impact Türkiye’s relations with Western powers, as it would signal a pivot towards a more multipolar world. Ankara might seek to leverage its BRICS membership to enhance trade and investment with member states.
**Editor:** What does this mean for Türkiye’s economy?
**Dr. Duran:** Economically, this partnership could open doors for increased trade opportunities, investment from BRICS nations, and potential collaborations in various sectors. Türkiye could benefit from participating in joint projects and gaining access to broader markets.
**Editor:** are there any potential challenges that Türkiye might face in this process?
**Dr. Duran:** Absolutely. Türkiye will need to navigate the complex dynamics within BRICS, as the member states have varying interests and political agendas. There’s also a risk of straining its traditional ties with Western countries. Balancing these relationships will be crucial for Türkiye as it explores this new partnership.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Duran, for your insights on this important development.
**Dr. Duran:** My pleasure, thank you for having me.
