Asthma and Allergy Foundation Celebrates 15 Years of Life-Saving Impact in Scotland

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Scotland’s sole charity dedicated to combating asthma, proudly commemorated 15 years of transformative work that has significantly improved the lives of over 111,320 individuals and families grappling with asthma throughout Scotland in this time span.

Since its inception in 2009, the Foundation has revolutionized asthma care by drastically reducing hospital admissions by an impressive 68%. This achievement has not only fostered improved health outcomes for countless children, enabling them to attend school more regularly but has also empowered numerous adults, including the elderly, to manage this life-altering and often life-threatening condition more effectively.

A legacy of key life-saving projects

From its early days, the Foundation has embarked on a journey filled with pioneering projects that have reshaped asthma care and heightened awareness throughout Scotland. Initiatives such as My Breath Is My Life, which operates in Grampian, Edinburgh, Lothians, and the Scottish Borders, alongside The Breathing Room in Glasgow and the Clyde, have fundamentally changed how those affected by asthma, their families, caregivers, and wider communities navigate the challenges associated with the condition. Through a multitude of workshops, countless adults and children living with asthma have gained vital skills to confidently manage their asthma and allergies, ultimately leading to better life prospects, educational opportunities, and career advancements.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike, CEO of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, reflected on this incredible milestone: “Fifteen years of impacting lives—it is both a time to celebrate our numerous achievements and renew our dedication to the mission ahead. We have worked tirelessly so no one has to face asthma alone or die needlessly from the condition. Together, with the strength of our community, volunteers, sponsors and partners, we have built something extraordinary, a dedicated service helping people with asthma breathe easier and live fulfilling lives.”

The Foundation’s forward-thinking initiatives also include the recent launch of an asthma awareness e-Learning course, which delivers critical education about asthma and allergy management directly to businesses and makes it accessible to individuals who need it most.

Vicki McGrain Rae, Head of Services and Health Promotion at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, emphasized the importance of education: “The power of education and support cannot be overstated. We see the difference in every life touched by our work, and we are committed to reaching even more people.”

Empowering communities through airwaves and campaigns

Among its impactful initiatives is the Breathe Better Scotland radio show airing on shmuFM, skillfully hosted by the engaging Stephen Tetteh Nakote, Project Coordinator at the Asthma and Allergy Foundation. Airing on the fourth Monday of each month at 1 PM, this show has captivated audiences beyond Scotland, attracting global listeners through online streaming. The program offers practical advice, moving personal narratives, and expert insights, empowering listeners to take charge of their asthma and encouraging them to thrive despite their condition. This show has become an invaluable resource for many.

Other noteworthy campaigns, including Be Asthma Aware, Asthma 999, Prevention is the Best Treatment, and the National Fragrance-Free Day initiative, have further amplified asthma awareness and management strategies within communities across Scotland. Each initiative brings the Foundation closer to its mission of creating a supportive community throughout the country where individuals facing asthma receive the help they need without having to endure their struggles in isolation.

Building future leaders, one volunteer at a time

The backbone of the Foundation’s success can be attributed to its dedicated volunteer base, whose passion and commitment have propelled the organization’s extensive influence. These volunteers, who receive direct mentorship from the inspiring Stephen Tetteh Nakote, play a crucial role in realizing the Foundation’s vision across Scotland. “Our volunteers are the heartbeat of our work,” Nakote expressed. “Their energy and dedication breathe life into our mission, and it’s a privilege to mentor them. Together, we’re changing lives today while simultaneously cultivating future leaders in asthma care.”

Through strategic partnerships with the University of Aberdeen and Robert Gordon University, Stephen Nakote also oversees placements for postgraduate and medical students. These hands-on experiences in asthma management ensure that the upcoming generation of healthcare professionals is not only well-informed about asthma care but also fueled by a passion for making a meaningful difference.

Stephen Nakote remarked, “We’re building the next generation of leaders. Our students leave with a deep understanding of asthma and a drive to create lasting change, armed with the leadership skills necessary for a healthier future.”

Looking forward: A future of hope and impact

As the Asthma and Allergy Foundation celebrates 15 years of life-saving accomplishments, the organization is resolutely focused on future endeavors. This milestone not only marks the culmination of significant achievements but also the initiation of a new chapter—with an unwavering commitment to broaden its outreach to ensure that every person in Scotland with asthma has the access they need to care, support, and education necessary for managing their condition effectively in every aspect of life.

Martina Chukwuma-Ezike looked forward with optimism, stating: “We have covered a lot of ground, but there’s still much more to do. With the unwavering support of our community, sponsors, and partners, we will continue pushing forward and ensure that every person with asthma in Scotland can live a life unburdened by their condition.”

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation is actively seeking your support. Whether through sponsorships, donations, volunteering or spreading awareness, everyone can make a transformative difference. Together, we can continue to change lives and create a Scotland where no one contends with asthma in solitude or faces needless mortality from the condition.
