– I saw it and the decision was wrong. The goal was correct. We have to accept it, we shouldn’t blame the referee. We are all human and we make mistakes. Today, however, it was a big mistake – emphasized Hansi Flick right after the 0-1 defeat against Real Sociedad. Who knows how the match would have turned out if not for the controversial decision in the 13th minute. Robert Lewandowski then scored, but the goal was canceled due to an alleged offside. But replays and subsequent recordings show that the goal was scored correctly. Most likely, the semi-automatic VAR system made a mistake and used the toe of Nayef Augerd’s shoe as a guide when drawing the offside line, suggesting that it was Lewandowski’s foot.

Deco demands explanations regarding Lewandowski being offside. “Is the arbitrator really unable to do anything in this situation?”
This decision of the judges caused quite a stir on the Internet. The media directly write that the Pole was “robbed” of the goal. “Can someone explain to me why Lewandowski was considered to have a shoe size of 56?”, “Compromise of referee Cuadra and VAR referees”, “VAR is nonsense” – the experts thundered.
Now Deco has spoken on the matter. “Mundo Deportivo” published an interview with the sports director, including the topic of Lewandowski’s canceled goal.
The representative of FC Barcelona emphasized that he did not intend to look for excuses and did not want to find the reasons for the defeat in an incorrect refereeing decision. However, he is certain that it was not correct. He had a lot of reservations about the functioning of VAR.
– I believe that VAR has still not solved the problems that it was supposed to solve. And I’m not just saying this based on this meeting. Some things have improved, but others are still one person’s interpretation. Yet technology is not yet able to overtake human decisions. Controversial decisions are still made, such as the one in the match against Real Sociedad, which, of course, was not the right one – he began.
And Deco didn’t stop there. He couldn’t understand how the semi-automatic offside system worked and demanded an explanation.
– I can’t understand it. If it’s a semi-automatic system, it’s not automatic, someone has to press the button. (…) This needs to be explained. Why is it semi-automatic? I’m lost at the moment. We’re not looking for excuses, but the question arises: what actually happened? Where is the error if it was indeed an error? If it didn’t happen, it doesn’t matter, but they need to explain something because we are a bit lost. We don’t know what a semi-automatic offside is, whether there is VAR influence, or whether the referee is actually unable to do anything in this situation – he added.
As he noted, explanations and an examination of the system are necessary to prevent similar errors and ambiguities from occurring in the future. – This is not just a problem for Barcelona, but for the whole of football. Tomorrow someone may make a wrong decision for Atletico, Sevilla, Rayo or Valladolid… We are currently leading the pack, so this mistake doesn’t hurt us that much, but let’s think what would happen if it appeared at a decisive moment of the season, it would decide about the league or relegation – he continued.
Lewandowski’s health problems
Sunday evening was therefore bitter for Barcelona, but above all for Lewandowski. Not only did his team lose, but he himself suffered a back injury. His break will last about 10 days, which means he will not play in the Polish national team’s matches in the Nations League. And in the coming days, the White and Reds will fight for survival. First they will play against Portugal (November 15), and three days later against Scotland.

**Interview with Deco: Addressing the Controversial Offside Decision in the Match Against Real Sociedad**
**Editor:** We are joined today by Deco, the sports director of FC Barcelona, who recently commented on the contentious offside decision that led to Robert Lewandowski’s disallowed goal in the match against Real Sociedad. Deco, thank you for being here.
**Deco:** Thank you for having me.
**Editor:** Following the match, many fans and analysts felt that Lewandowski was unjustly “robbed” of a goal. You also expressed your thoughts on the decision. Could you elaborate on your perspective?
**Deco:** Absolutely. While I do not want to make excuses for our defeat, I firmly believe that the decision was incorrect. VAR was introduced to eliminate refereeing errors, but too often we see that it does not resolve the issues it set out to address. The offside call in this match is a perfect example of that.
**Editor:** You mentioned that VAR hasn’t fully solved the problems it aimed to address. Can you explain what you mean by that?
**Deco:** Well, technology has certainly come a long way, and some things have improved, but there are still significant gaps. Many decisions still rely on human interpretation, which can lead to inconsistencies. In this case, the semi-automatic offside system seems flawed; it suggested Lewandowski was offside based on a misunderstanding of how to measure it accurately, which is unacceptable.
**Editor:** Given the uproar surrounding the decision, do you think the referees or VAR officials should provide more explanations to the public?
**Deco:** Yes, I believe transparency is crucial. Fans deserve to understand how these decisions are made. If the system is semi-automatic, then how does it differ from a fully automated one? We need clarity on the processes behind these controversial calls to restore trust in officiating.
**Editor:** It sounds like you are calling for significant improvements in how VAR operates. What changes would you like to see implemented?
**Deco:** First and foremost, I want VAR to become truly reliable. That means refining the technology to ensure mistakes like this don’t happen. There should be clear guidelines on how decisions are made, and if there are doubts, the referee should have the final say with access to all necessary tools. Football is fast-paced, and the game shouldn’t suffer because of delays or errors in technology.
**Editor:** Thank you for sharing your insights, Deco. It’s clear that the conversation surrounding officiating and VAR in football is far from over.
**Deco:** Thank you. I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this vital aspect of our game.
