Celebrating Life and Art: István Nemere’s 80th Birthday and Health Scare
Well, well, folks! It seems that István Nemere has hit the big 8-0! You could say he’s officially a nonagenarian in the world of publishing! Or is it “an octogenarian”? I always get those terms muddled with my bank statements! Anyway, here’s the juicy detail: he celebrated in style at the National Széchényi Library with a surprise party that would make even a magician go, “How did they pull that off?”
This wasn’t just any birthday bash – oh no, my friends! Imagine showing up expecting to present your latest masterpiece, Broken Wings, only to find your friends and colleagues ready to throw confetti and sing to you! This unexpected twist had our dear István completely taken aback. Classy dude though – in a world where competitors drop like flies (unlucky for them but great for him!), he quipped, “I compete with myself!” Now, isn’t that the kind of humility that keeps publishers on their toes?
I have a lot more to say! My competitors have all died out around me. I compete with myself.
What’s more, the party featured not just birthday cake but five new volumes of Nemere’s work! So if you thought turning 80 meant a quiet evening with a cup of tea and crossword puzzles, you’re gravely mistaken! Instead, he waltzed into the 800th milestone in publications! They say not all heroes wear capes; some just write a lot of books!
From Birthday Bliss to Unexpected Woe
However, just when the clouds of joy were parting for István, life decided to throw a bit of drama into the mix. On his way to an autograph signing at Duna Plaza, things took a turn faster than a plot twist in one of his novels. Witnesses recounted how after handing over the wheel, he slumped over, leaving everyone scrambling faster than a bunch of seagulls over a dropped chip!
It’s been a long time since I saw István so happy and excited… After the birthday celebration, we went to Duna Plaza… His head drooped and he was motionless.
Now, this wasn’t just a minor hiccup. Judit Szentgyörgyi, his wife, had to call for an ambulance faster than I call for a pizza on a Friday night! With multiple responders arriving, it became a race against time to get him stabilized. The poor chap ended up under deep anesthesia in the hospital, leaving us all holding our breaths like we were in a suspense thriller.
The Fight for Life
As it stands now, doctors are still bravely battling to aid Mr. Nemere’s recovery. It’s remarkable to learn that for the last decade, the writer remained complaint-free. But remember, folks – you can’t judge a book by its cover—or a person by their calm exterior, apparently!
Mátyás Kapa, the head of the Society of Historical Novel Writers, was left in shock after organizing the festive celebration. Here’s hoping that soon we’ll see István back in action – perhaps with an even more gripping tale of survival than we ever imagined!
István has been a member of our company since the beginning… I hope to see you again soon with another volume.
And as his friend Attila Járai optimistically pointed out, this isn’t the first time Nemere has flirted with the Grim Reaper. History has shown he’s got a stubbornness that would even impress a mule. Remember folks, it’s not about how many times you get knocked down, but how often you pick yourself back up—preferably with a cup of tea and a witty one-liner!
So let’s raise a glass to István Nemere—may he live to charm us with many more tales and birthday surprises! And if you’re in the vicinity of a hospital that doubles as a publishing house, do give him a shout-out!

As about the Glance also reported, István Nemere recently celebrated his eightieth birthday. For the event, his publisher, colleagues and friends organized a surprise for the writer, who was greeted at the National Széchényi Library. The author believed that his 795th volume, a Broken wings he is coming to the presentation of the book, but instead he was received by the Society of Historical Novel Writers and the World Ocean publishing house together with his friends and loved ones. The creator spoke of the event as the most fantastic birthday surprise of his life, and he also told Blikk with a smile:
I have a lot more to say! My competitors have all died out around me. I compete with myself.
The event took place in a good atmosphere, where the publisher also surprised the 80-year-old artist by giving him copies of his five new volumes published over the weekend, so in addition to the round birthday, he also arrived with 800 published works. From there, the artist went to the Duna Plaza for an autograph session, but on the way home he got sick in the car.
It’s been a long time since I saw István so happy and excited, he was preparing for the upcoming UFO meeting, at which he was to give a presentation. But life or fate wanted it differently. After the birthday celebration, we went to Duna Plaza to sign autographs, and then headed to the car. He usually drives, but now he’s handed the wheel to me. After barely a minute, his head drooped and he was motionless. I tried to ferment it, but it didn’t work
– quotes writer Judit Szentgyörgyi of Blikk, wife of István Nemere. Szentgyörgyi added: “I called the ambulance and his nearby publisher, Attila Vincze and his wife, Natália Nagy, to help until the ambulance came. In the meantime, Nati also called the ambulances, so soon two arrived. They did everything to get István in a transportable state. They fought for his life for at least half an hour, until they managed to get him to the hospital, where he is now under deep anesthesia. We don’t know what will happen to the poor, but we hope…”
They are fighting for his life
According to the newspaper’s information, it is not possible to breathe yet. The doctors are still fighting for István Nemere. According to his wife, the writer never complained in the last ten years, there were no signs of the incident.
Mátyás Kapa, head of the Society of Historical Novel Writers, organized István Nemere’s birthday celebration, and the next meeting and book launch were also discussed, so the news was a shock to him as well.
István has been a member of our company since the beginning, and he was always happy to come to our meetings if time allowed. I hope to see you again soon with another volume
– quotes Mátyás Kapa in Blikk. Attila Járai, Nemere’s friend, is positive about things and recalled that something similar had happened to the writer once, but even then his will to live prevailed: “István will always be in poor health, but he almost left us here twenty years ago. He was revived in the Szeged hospital.”
