Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury resigns –

The spiritual leader of the Anglicans, Justin Welby, announced his resignation on Tuesday, following the publication of a report into the Church of England’s handling of physical and sexual assaults committed against more than a hundred children and young people. “I hope this decision clearly demonstrates how much the Church of England understands the need for change and our deep commitment to creating a safer Church,” Justin Welby wrote in a statement. These attacks were committed by a lawyer as part of his activities with the Church of England between the 1970s and the mid-2010s.

**Dr. Roberts:** Thank you for having me. My first reaction was one of surprise, but ‌also understanding. Resignation at this level typically indicates a recognition of deep accountability, ⁣and it underscores the gravity of the issues ‌at hand, particularly the report detailing the abuses that ‌took place over several decades.

**Editor:** The report‍ revealed‍ that over a hundred children and young people were victims of terrible abuses within the Church. How significant is it that the leader of the Church chose to resign in light of this?

**Dr. Roberts:** It is ‍highly significant. Resigning is an act that sends a powerful message about accountability and a commitment to change. By stepping down, Welby ‍is acknowledging the failures of‌ the institution under his leadership‌ and the urgent need for reform within the Church of ⁤England. It’s a pivotal moment that may encourage⁤ other leaders to take similar accountability in‌ the face of such grave allegations.

**Editor:** Welby mentioned his hope‌ that this decision would demonstrate the Church’s commitment to creating a safer environment. What changes do you think are necessary for this to happen effectively?

**Dr. Roberts:** ‍First and foremost, there needs‌ to be ⁣a transparent⁤ investigation into past incidents, ensuring that‌ survivors feel heard ‌and supported throughout the process. Additionally, implementing robust ‌safeguarding policies and mandatory training for clergy members is essential. **Dr. Roberts:** This resignation could lead to a deeper scrutiny ⁢of the Church and its practices, but it also presents an opportunity for renewal.⁣ If the ⁣Church can genuinely demonstrate commitment to change and address these issues head-on, it may begin to rebuild trust with its⁤ congregants and the broader ⁣public.
