The spiritual leader of the Anglicans, Justin Welby, announced his resignation on Tuesday, following the publication of a report into the Church of England’s handling of physical and sexual assaults committed against more than a hundred children and young people. “I hope this decision clearly demonstrates how much the Church of England understands the need for change and our deep commitment to creating a safer Church,” Justin Welby wrote in a statement. These attacks were committed by a lawyer as part of his activities with the Church of England between the 1970s and the mid-2010s.
Justin Welby was ordained in 1992 after an 11-year career in the oil industry. He spent his first 15 years of service in the Diocese of Coventry, often in places of significant deprivation. In 2002 he was appointed Canon of Coventry Cathedral, where he co-led its international reconciliation work. During this period he worked extensively in Africa and the Middle East. Since then Archbishop Justin has had a passion for reconciliation and peacebuilding. He was Dean of Liverpool from 2007 to 2011 and Bishop of Durham from 2011 to 2012, before being announced as the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury in late 2012. John Smyth was a British lawyer who molested boys he met at summer camps over the years 70s and 80s.
