One of Aspen’s foremost objectives is to establish itself as the premier destination for discovering the complete spectrum of a library’s resources and services. In the latest 24.11 release, Grove advanced this initiative by enabling libraries to provide seamless access to multiple OverDrive collections under a single library account. Additionally, users can now search the CloudSource OA database directly from within Aspen, and the integration of the ILL platform SHAREit from Auto-Graphics has also been enhanced.
Alex Vancina, the Technology & Metadata Services Manager at the Helen Plum Library, which sponsored the SHAREit integration, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Grove:
“Integrating search results from our SHAREit system, Find More Illinois, has been a key feature on Helen Plum Library’s wish list ever since we introduced Aspen Discovery two years ago. We’re thrilled that we could partner with Grove to make this vision a reality. We eagerly anticipate the enhanced access to interlibrary loan resources that this integration will provide, benefiting both our own patrons and other SHAREit users throughout the Aspen community.”
The SHAREit integration enriches Aspen’s search capability by including results from other libraries participating in the same Interlibrary Loan system alongside the standard Aspen Search results. Patrons can conveniently search SHAREit directly from the main Aspen interface, streamlining the process of accessing interlibrary resources.
Likewise, libraries and consortia that have access to CloudSource OA, a leading open-access journal database from SirsiDynix, can also utilize this functionality through the main Aspen search bar, thanks to the support of CLEVNET.
Access to multiple OverDrive collections within a single library scenario is commonplace, particularly in regions with state-wide or regional OverDrive accounts supported by consortia or individual library memberships. The Panhandle Public Library Cooperative System exemplifies this, having sponsored development efforts to seamlessly integrate both of its OverDrive collections into the same Aspen catalog, enhancing patron experience by simplifying access to e-resources.
Just as Aspen intelligently selects the most appropriate edition for a hold when faced with multiple bibliographic records for the same title, it has implemented a built-in logic system for determining the optimal collection for placing holds on titles available across both OverDrive collections. This innovative feature facilitates libraries in showcasing their distinct collections of OverDrive books and magazines, allowing both to be visible in the catalog simultaneously. Furthermore, Grove has incorporated this functionality into the LiDA library app, broadening access for mobile users.

**Interview with Alex Vancina: Enhancing Library Services Through Technology**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Alex. As the Technology & Metadata Services Manager at the Helen Plum Library, you’ve been at the forefront of some exciting developments with Aspen. Can you share what the latest updates mean for libraries and their patrons?
**Alex Vancina:** Absolutely! The latest 24.11 release from Aspen represents a significant step forward for libraries striving to provide comprehensive access to resources. By allowing patrons to access multiple OverDrive collections under a single library account, we’re drastically simplifying the user experience. This means less time spent navigating different platforms and more time enjoying the resources.
**Editor:** That certainly sounds beneficial! You mentioned the integration of SHAREit. How does this impact Interlibrary Loan services?
**Alex Vancina:** Integrating our SHAREit system into Aspen has been something we’ve dreamed about since we first adopted Aspen Discovery two years ago. This enhancement allows our patrons to see search results from other libraries using the same Interlibrary Loan system right alongside standard Aspen results. It streamlines the process of finding and requesting materials, not just for our patrons, but for everyone in the Aspen community using SHAREit.
**Editor:** Collaboration seems to be a core value with these updates. What has the partnership with Grove meant for your library?
**Alex Vancina:** Working with Grove has been a fantastic experience. They are receptive to our needs and have made it possible to realize our vision for an integrated search system. We believe that with these new features, we’ll be able to better serve our patrons and enhance their access to a wider range of interlibrary resources.
**Editor:** You also mentioned the CloudSource OA database integration. Can you elaborate on that?
**Alex Vancina:** Sure! The integration of CloudSource OA allows libraries and consortia that have access to this leading open-access journal database to utilize it through the main Aspen search bar. This means patrons can easily discover academic articles and research materials, making valuable resources more accessible than ever before.
**Editor:** These updates sound like a game changer for library services. What do you hope to see in the future as a result of these developments?
**Alex Vancina:** I hope we continue to build on this momentum, expanding access to even more resources. Our goal is to transform the way our community interacts with library services, making it easier and more intuitive for everyone. The more seamless we can make the process, the better we can serve our users and foster a love of reading and learning.
**Editor:** Thank you for sharing your insights, Alex. It’s exciting to see such innovation in library services, and we look forward to hearing more about the impact it has on your community!
