Very popular, sparkling water is a refreshing option that can bring health benefits. The drink can be found in two versions: naturally carbonated, generally more expensive, and artificial, which goes through a process of adding carbon dioxide.
In an interview prior to Metropolisesnutritionist Alessandro Mascarenhas, professor of the Nutrition course at Faculdade Anhanguera in Divinópolis (MG), stated that sparkling water is healthy, but caution is needed.
“Sparkling water is great, but components that are not suitable for the physiology of the gastrointestinal tract are added. Drinking in moderation is fine, but it is necessary to avoid daily or very frequent consumption”, he explained.
Nutritionist Isaac Nunes, who works in Brasília, adds that sparkling water is as hydrating as the non-carbonated option, but agrees that consumption should be moderate to avoid causing stomach discomfort. “I recommend not exceeding one liter of the drink per day”, he stated, also in a previous interview with Metropolises.
He explained that, in some people, excessive consumption of carbonated liquids can cause abdominal discomfort or gas for much of the day, as the ingested gas needs to escape. “Some may have reflux or gastritis due to excess fluid,” he highlighted.

In general, sparkling water is considered less beneficial than the natural version, especially for people with gastritis or gastric problems, but it can be useful in the weight loss process by providing a greater feeling of satiety.
The carbon dioxide present in the drink contributes to the feeling of “fullness” in the stomach. Furthermore, sparkling water is often used as an alternative to higher-calorie drinks, such as soft drinks and juices.
According to Mascarenhas, another advantage of the drink is its ability to help improve intestinal transit, facilitating the movement of the food bolus from the stomach to the intestine, due to the movements caused by the gas. However, he reinforces that it is important to chew food well before swallowing it to optimize the process.
A common question about sparkling water is whether it can harm your teeth. Carbonated drinks, such as soft drinks, can cause harm due to acidity and sugar: the problem is not in the gas. Therefore, when sparkling water does not pose a risk to your teeth.

**Interview with Nutritionist Alessandro Mascarenhas on Sparkling Water**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Professor Alessandro Mascarenhas. Sparkling water is becoming increasingly popular as a refreshing beverage. Can you tell us how it differs from regular water in terms of health benefits?
**Alessandro Mascarenhas:** Thank you for having me. Sparkling water can indeed be a refreshing alternative to still water. The primary difference lies in its carbonation. The naturally carbonated version comes from mineral springs and retains some beneficial minerals like calcium, while artificial carbonation involves adding carbon dioxide, which can alter the drink’s attributes.
**Editor:** You mention moderation in consumption. What risks are associated with drinking sparkling water too frequently?
**Alessandro Mascarenhas:** While sparkling water is generally healthy, it can contain components that might not be ideal for everyone’s gastrointestinal tract. Overconsumption can lead to issues such as bloating or gas. I recommend enjoying it but being cautious with daily consumption to avoid discomfort.
**Editor:** Nutritionist Isaac Nunes mentioned a limit of one liter per day. Do you agree with this recommendation?
**Alessandro Mascarenhas:** Absolutely. That aligns well with what I advise. One liter is a safe amount for most people. However, individuals with certain digestive conditions should be especially careful, as carbonation can exacerbate symptoms like reflux or gastritis.
**Editor:** In terms of hydration, does sparkling water provide the same benefits as regular water?
**Alessandro Mascarenhas:** Yes, it is just as hydrating as non-carbonated water. The key is to enjoy it in moderation and be mindful of how it impacts your body personally.
**Editor:** Thank you for your insights, Professor Mascarenhas. It’s great to understand both the benefits and potential pitfalls of sparkling water consumption.
**Alessandro Mascarenhas:** Thank you for having me! Remember, it’s all about balance and listening to your body.
