The president of Turkey, the Islamist Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has expressed by telephone to Donald Trump his desire to improve bilateral relations with the United States after the victory of the Republican candidate in the presidential elections.
In that telephone conversation, Erdogan again congratulated Trump on his victory, as reported by the Turkish Presidency in a statement on the social network X.
“President Erdogan expressed his desire to improve cooperation between Türkiye and the United States in the new period,” the message states.

Already on Wednesday, Erdogan expressed his confidence that the Republican’s return to the White House will contribute to ending the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
In that first message, the Turkish head of state referred to Trump as his “friend” and spoke of the beginning of a new era.
Despite the good harmony between the two conservative politicians, during Trump’s first term (2017-2021), the White House threatened to impose sanctions on Türkiye on five occasions.
During the mandate of his successor, Democrat Joe Biden, relations also went through moments of tension, for example due to Washington’s veto of the sale of state-of-the-art US military aircraft to Turkey.
