Two days after Michael Lindner‘s surprising announcement of his withdrawal as Upper Austrian SPÖ leader and state councilor, the party decided on how to proceed in its state committees on Monday.
The former member of the National Council and ex-minister Alois Stöger will take over the acting chairmanship on an interim basis from December 1st, said state managing director Florian Koppler following the meetings of the state party presidium and state party executive board.

The decision in the party executive committee to give Stöger this role was made unanimously. With his many years of political experience, he was the “ideal person,” said Koppler. He will initiate a process in accordance with the statutes in order to quickly find a successor to Lindner. To this end, he was commissioned to conduct individual discussions. The party executive then nominates someone. According to the statute, this designated state party leader or chairman will then be put to the red base for a ballot, Koppler explained the timetable.

Names of potential candidates were not announced on Monday.
In 2022, the SPÖ Upper Austria decided to have the chairmanship elected directly by the members. Lindner was the first to be elected state party leader in this way. For family reasons, he has now decided to say goodbye to politics completely. The 41-year-old said in an emotional statement on Saturday that he wanted to spend more time with his two sons and see them grow up.
