At a memorial ceremony to mark Veterans Day, US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris appeared together in public for the first time since the Democrats’ election defeat. The memorial service honoring fallen soldiers took place on Monday at Arlington Cemetery near Washington. It was the first public appearance of the defeated Democratic presidential candidate Harris since her election result speech on Wednesday.
Biden and Harris, both dressed in dark suits, attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the cemetery. Biden had previously welcomed veterans to the White House on the occasion of Remembrance Day, which is declared a public holiday in the USA.
Almost a week after the election, the Democrats are in the middle of a debate about the reasons for their defeat. The Republican candidate and former President Donald Trump clearly won against Harris. In addition, the Republicans wrested the majority in the Senate from the Democrats.

Biden leaves office on January 20th, the same day Trump will be sworn in as the new president. On Wednesday, Biden will receive his successor at the White House to prepare for the transfer of power.
