American In the case of the death of an Indiana mother of two, her family said in July that the woman’s death was “too early.” The water Caused by drinking.
Ashley Summers was enjoying a hike at Lake Freeman in Indiana over the Fourth of July weekend when she told people around her that she was feeling dehydrated and light-headed. They felt like they could not drink enough water.
After drinking several bottles of water in a short period of time, the woman went home and passed out in the garage.
The woman’s family rushed her to IU Health Ornate Hospital, but she never regained consciousness and died of water poisoning.
“It was a shock to all of us,” Ashley’s brother Devon Miller told WRTV. When they (doctors) first started talking about the toxicity of the water, did it feel like it happened?’
He further said, ‘Someone said they drank four bottles of water in 20 minutes. I mean an average water bottle is like 16 ounces so they drank 64 ounces of water in 20 minutes which is half a gallon. You drink so much water throughout the day.’
“This is relatively rare,” hospital doctor Alok Harwani told WLFI TV.
‘What we are concerned about now is simply drinking too much water in a short period of time. Actually, your kidneys can clean only one liter of water in an hour.’

The doctor said it’s a good idea to eat or drink electrolytes in addition to plain water when spending a lot of time outdoors in hot weather to help maintain the balance of water and salts in the blood. These items include sports drinks, gatograde and fruit.
He added that the things to watch out for are ‘if you really start to feel a lack of focus, a lot of fatigue and exhaustion.’
‘Sometimes patients feel a slight headache or just feel sick. These can be early signs of water poisoning… so if you’re really worried that you or a family member isn’t doing well and you’re concerned about water poisoning, call 911. Don’t hesitate to do it. Don’t hesitate to go to the (emergency room).’
Deaths due to excess water have also happened in the past in different situations.
According to Scientific American magazine, people have died from water poisoning in everything from a live drinking contest on a radio station to being part of a student group.
Also, a student at the University of California was forced to drink copious amounts of water during breaks during push-ups.
Club-goers, especially those using drugs like MDMA, may be at risk of water poisoning because they sweat profusely and drink water during hours of dancing. live

**Interview with Devon Miller, Brother of Ashley Summers**
**Editor:** Devon, thank you for joining us today to share about your sister Ashley’s unfortunate passing. Can you start by telling us what happened on that Fourth of July weekend?
**Devon Miller:** Thank you for having me. That day, Ashley went hiking at Lake Freeman with friends. It was a really hot day, and she started feeling dehydrated and light-headed. She mentioned she couldn’t drink enough water, so she ended up consuming several bottles quickly.
**Editor:** That sounds alarming. What happened after she returned home?
**Devon Miller:** After the hike, she went home and unfortunately passed out in the garage. We rushed her to IU Health Ornate Hospital, but she never regained consciousness. It was gut-wrenching for all of us.
**Editor:** Your family mentioned the shock of learning it was water poisoning. Can you elaborate on how you felt upon hearing that?
**Devon Miller:** It was utterly shocking. At first, we couldn’t believe it. Water poisoning? It just seemed so unbelievable. I’ve heard people talk about hydration but never that it could lead to something so tragic. When we learned that she drank four bottles—around half a gallon—in just 20 minutes, it put everything into perspective.
**Editor:** Dr. Alok Harwani mentioned that it’s rare but possible to drink too much water in a short period. What advice would you give others based on your experience?
**Devon Miller:** I would tell everyone to be careful about their water intake, especially during hot weather. It’s essential to listen to your body. I never thought something like this could happen, but I’ve learned it’s crucial to balance water intake with electrolytes. It could save a life.
**Editor:** Thank you for sharing your story, Devon. It’s a powerful reminder for all of us about the importance of hydration and being aware of our limits.
**Devon Miller:** Thank you for having me. I hope Ashley’s story can help prevent something like this from happening to anyone else.
