The characters within his pages—such as Domenico Marchettini, known as Ricciolo, a portly porter with a penchant for brawling, and Giuseppe Major, a taciturn illiterate miner—embody the struggles and resilience of the oppressed. “If they shine, it is for the quartz of their granite teeth. If their skin changes color, it’s because a wound bleeds like a vein of hematite.” These figures, often relegated to the faceless mass in history, emerge as vibrant individuals, telling their own narrative of the Upper Maremma at the dawn of fascism—an era rife with turmoil, rebellion, and defiance against authoritarianism.
At 5pm, the final traveling event of the workshop celebrating the “Lanternata di San Martino” will take place.
