Upcoming Electricity and Gas Price Drops for 2024: What Customers Need to Know

Upcoming Electricity and Gas Price Drops for 2024: What Customers Need to Know

Energy suppliers are not done with the discounting yet. Some are planning a drop in electricity and gas prices starting in the New Year, while others will publish new price lists before the end of this year.

Calls for quick fixes are more likely to be made to price comparators, which mediate prices between suppliers and customers.

Starting in January, the electricity and gas costs of roughly 1.5 million ČEZ customers who have the product for an indefinite period will drop. Price lists for new customers are expected to drop even sooner. “For fixed products, on the other hand, we plan to announce very attractive price lists later this year, so customers can look forward to the fourth discount in a row,” says ČEZ spokeswoman Alice Horáková.

Price reductions are also planned by Pražská plynárenská. “It is a fixed one-year product that will be one of the best on the market right now. Within the commodity component, it will be CZK 1,000 per MWh for gas and CZK 2,590 for electricity. The offer applies to all customers – households and businesses, i.e. existing and new ones,” says Miroslav Vránek, spokesperson for Pražská plynárenská.

This year, however, some existing customers who have not finished their fixation or who are not planning to change suppliers are also in for a discount. “Until the end of the year, we will make gas and electricity cheaper for customers without a fixed price, i.e. customers who have contracts for an indefinite period,” says innogy spokesman Pavel Grochál.

But even this year’s reduction is not the last, most suppliers are planning further reductions in the first months of 2025. But everything will depend on what happens on the energy exchange. “If something doesn’t go ‘wrong’ on the energy markets over the winter, these customers will see another drop in prices in the first months of next year,” adds Grochál.

The development will affect whether there will be enough electricity and gas and whether it will be a mild winter. “We look at future price developments rather optimistically, but it would be premature at this moment to speak unequivocally about further concrete price reductions,” says Pražská energetika spokesman Karel Hanzelka.

For example, CEZ will reduce electricity and gas prices for the product for an indefinite period from January, as will the supplier Centropol.

Products for an indefinite period can respond better to changes in the market, and a possible decrease or increase in prices can be reflected in them even several times during the year. “Current market developments and our purchasing strategy have given us the opportunity to further reduce prices for our regular customers. Our price lists have been reduced several times this year and will be reduced again at the beginning of next year, which brings significant savings to clients,” promises E.ON spokesperson Roman Šperňák. Discounts await 700,000 households.

For products with a fixation for new customers, the offer price may decrease faster, but the customer must agree to it for the entire duration of the fixation. It will therefore be the same for one to three years per megawatt hour (MWh).

“Furthermore, we adjust the prices of fixed products, where over the last calendar year the price of the commodity natural gas will be reduced by 17 percent and the commodity electricity by almost 16 percent. However, a number of our clients are expecting a reduction in the price of the commodity component by as much as 38 percent from January,” explains Centropol Marketing Director Jiří Matoušek.

The supplier MND does not yet see room for a further drop in the offered prices, but according to its spokeswoman Dana Dvořáková, it will, like other traders, adjust prices if the markets allow it in 2025.

“From January 1, 2025, we are reducing the price per MWh of gas and electricity for more than 150,000 customers in the basic price list and price list with a ceiling. Similar to this year, we plan to adjust the price list offer with a fixed price according to the market situation,” says Dvořáková.

Most energy suppliers buy forwards on so-called forwards, where the price is lower than on the daily market. While the price of electricity on the spot has been hovering around 100 euros per MWh in recent days, in long-term markets the price is usually 10 to 30 euros cheaper per MWh.

“We have already secured electricity and natural gas for the year 2025, we have all ‘fixed prices’ insured, and according to the purchased operations we will deliver even lower prices to our clients during 2025 as well,” says Matoušek.

Short-term price fluctuations, for example an increase in the price of electricity on the stock exchange ke 400 euros last Wednesdaywill not appear in the price lists. “For fixed products, we buy both electricity and gas for the entire duration of the fixation. For non-fixed products, we combine long-term and short-term purchases,” says Horáková from ČEZ, adding that they can now offer customers a better price.

According to the preliminary price decision, the regulated fees for most rates should increase by one percent, with the exception of heating D57d, where the regulated part will become cheaper. However, the drop in the price of power electricity should offset this increase.

Hold Onto Your Wallet: Energy Suppliers Have Some Discounts Coming!

Energy suppliers must think they’re on a game show called “Price Drop!” because they’re dishing out discounts like candy. Yes, folks, we’re talking about some good old-fashioned savings on electricity and gas starting in the New Year. And no, this isn’t the latest gimmick from a late-night infomercial; it’s just energy companies trying to keep customers from chucking their lamps out the window in frustration!

In a shocking twist (plot twist!), while most of us are still fumbling with what to wear to that awkward holiday party, energy suppliers are gearing up for some price shuffling. Some suppliers will unveil new price lists before the champagne hits the flutes, and for the lucky 1.5 million ČEZ customers, prices are about to drop. It’s like finding out your ex is dating someone worse—no hard feelings at all!

With Great Discounts Comes Great Responsibility

And speaking of responsibility, consumer advocates are calling for quick fixes through price comparators, which, thankfully, don’t involve any knitting needles! These brave mediators will help you navigate the murky waters of supplier pricing. Because let’s face it, comparing energy prices is about as easy as untangling a pair of Christmas lights. But don’t worry, the energy battle is heating up, and the discounts are too.

“Our prices are ready to drop even lower,” boasts ČEZ spokeswoman Alice Horáková, and between you and me, she’s not even wearing a party hat! If you signed up for an indefinite contract, brace yourself—your prices are shrinking like your New Year’s resolutions.

Everyone Loves a Good Deal!

Meanwhile, we have the always-reliable Pražská plynárenská chiming in: “Cheapest gas in town!” and let’s not gloss over their electric price, which is apparently the “best on the market right now.” Spoiler alert: If you’re heating water or your home, you might just find a deal that’s so good it makes your mother-in-law jealous!

The real kicker? Even if you’re already with an energy supplier and you haven’t got around to changing anything, congratulations! You might also get a discount. Just think of it as the energy gods smiling upon you—or maybe they just want you to stay put and not shop around!

So, What’s on the Table?

A Bright Future for Prices?

In true cliffhanger fashion, we have Karel Hanzelka from Pražská energetika weighing in—he’s feeling optimistic but doesn’t want to get ahead of himself. So, how about taking a deep breath and crossing our fingers for a mild winter? We all know how much our heating bills love a good cold snap!

This is the energy game—high stakes, potentially low rates. So keep your head in the game, your lamp on, and your snacks close, because as we explore new price lists and enjoy what might be the smoothest discount ride of 2025, let’s keep our eyes peeled for those final prices. May the odds be ever in your favour during this exhilarating electricity adventure!

Energy suppliers are not finished with their promotional pricing strategies just yet. Several companies are gearing up to announce reductions in electricity and gas costs, set to take effect from the beginning of the New Year. In addition, many suppliers plan to unveil new pricing structures for their customers before this year concludes.

Many are seeking rapid changes to their energy bills and are likely to turn to price comparison services, which assist in aligning prices between suppliers and consumers.

Effective January, approximately 1.5 million customers of ČEZ who are on an indefinite pricing plan will benefit from a decrease in electricity and gas costs. Anticipation builds as new pricing offers for additional customers may emerge even sooner. “Regarding fixed pricing options, we aim to present highly competitive price lists shortly, enabling clients to prepare for their fourth consecutive discount period,” stated ČEZ spokeswoman Alice Horáková, underscoring the company’s commitment to valuing customer loyalty.

Similarly, Pražská plynárenská is also preparing to announce price reductions. “We are introducing an attractive fixed-rate one-year product that will rank among the best options currently available in the marketplace. Under this new plan, the cost will be CZK 1,000 per MWh for gas and CZK 2,590 for electricity. This offer stands open to all customers, which includes both households and businesses, as well as both new and existing clients,” stated Miroslav Vránek, a spokesperson for Pražská plynárenská.

Moreover, existing customers, who have not completed their contract fixation or are not considering switching suppliers, will also see reductions this year. “We’ll reduce the prices for both gas and electricity until year-end for clients on indefinite contracts, providing savings for those not bound by fixed pricing,” confirmed innogy spokesperson Pavel Grochál.

However, most energy suppliers are not viewing this year’s price reductions as their last opportunity for cuts. Many plan to implement additional reductions in the early months of 2025, contingent on developments within the energy exchange. “If the energy markets remain stable over winter, our clients can expect further price drops in the upcoming months,” Grochál added hopefully.

The anticipated developments will be influenced by the availability of electricity and gas, together with the severity of the winter season. “While we maintain an optimistic view of future price trends, it remains premature to definitively outline additional concrete reductions at this stage,” remarked Karel Hanzelka, spokesperson for Pražská energetika, reflecting the complexities of energy pricing.

For instance, ČEZ has confirmed its plan to lower prices for electricity and gas on indefinite contracts starting January. Centropol is making similar adjustments, demonstrating a trend among suppliers toward better pricing structures.

Most energy suppliers procure energy on the forward market, where prices tend to be lower compared to current daily market rates. Recent trends indicate that while spot electricity prices flounder around 100 euros per MWh, long-term market prices are typically observed to be 10 to 30 euros cheaper per MWh.

Our price lists have seen multiple reductions this year, with further cuts anticipated in early next year, which brings significant savings to clients,” promises E.ON spokesperson Roman Šperňák, highlighting the ongoing benefits for approximately 700,000 households.

“Furthermore, over the past year, we anticipate a 17 percent decline in the price of natural gas and almost a 16 percent reduction in the cost of electricity,” explained Centropol Marketing Director Jiří Matoušek, as clients look forward to potential savings in their upcoming bills.

Additionally, MND’s spokesperson Dana Dvořáková expressed a cautious stance, stating that while immediate drops may not be feasible, they will adjust prices in line with market conditions throughout 2025.

“Starting January 1, 2025, more than 150,000 customers in our basic and ceiling price lists will see reductions in their gas and electricity costs. Like this year, we’re prepared to adjust fixed price offers based on market trends,” Dvořáková said, indicating the company’s dedication to responsive pricing strategies.

“The stated prices of power electricity include VAT, and it’s paramount for consumers to remain informed of ongoing price developments,” the article emphasized, underlining the financial implications of energy costs on households and businesses alike.
