The Indian men’s cricket team faced a disappointing three-wicket defeat against South Africa in the second match of the ongoing four-match T20 series for 2024, held on a vibrant Sunday at St George’s Park in Gqebera.
This unexpected loss not only leveled the series 1-1 but also ended India’s remarkable 11-match winning streak, which had been built on the back of an impressive performance in the series opener, where world champions India, inspired by Sanju Samson’s spectacular century, recorded a solid 61-run victory just two days prior.
As the top-ranked T20I side globally, India encountered early trouble, losing regular wickets and only managing to post a modest total of 124 runs for the loss of 6 wickets after their allotted 20 overs.
South Africa, currently positioned sixth in the T20I rankings, seemed to struggle initially against the Indian bowlers. However, a standout performance from Varun Chakravarthy, who took an impressive 5 wickets for just 17 runs in the middle overs, turned the tide. Eventually, the hosts chased down the target, finishing with 128 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in just 19 overs, sealed by an unbeaten 42-run partnership between Tristan Stubbs and Gerald Coetzee for the eighth wicket.
Put in to bat first after losing the toss, India were immediately on the back foot as they suffered a shocking blow when Sanju Samson was dismissed for a duck on only the third ball of the innings. Abhishek Sharma and Indian T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav quickly followed suit, also falling for single-digit scores, leaving the world champions reeling at a dismal 15 runs for 3 wickets in just four overs.
Tilak Varma made an attempt to stabilize the innings with a run-a-ball 20, but his efforts were thwarted by a brilliant one-handed catch from South African stalwart David Miller at extra cover during the eighth over.
In an unfortunate turn of events, Axar Patel was run out while at the non-striker’s end due to a deflection off Hardik Pandya’s straight drive, further denting India’s chances as they slipped to 70/5 by the 12th over.
With runs hard to come by, Rinku Singh’s ambition to accelerate the scoring rate resulted in his dismissal, leaving India struggling at a precarious 87/6 by the 15th over.
With India featuring four specialist fast bowlers, Hardik Pandya took it upon himself to guide his team to a competitive total, maintaining most of the strike in the final five overs. Despite their efforts, India could only manage a paltry addition of 38 runs during that period, finishing their innings on 124/6, with Hardik Pandya being the lone warrior, top-scoring with an unbeaten 39 runs off 45 balls.
In South Africa’s reply, the innings started positively, but Indian bowler Arshdeep Singh quickly got them back into the contest by removing Ryan Rickelton in the third over.
Varun Chakravarthy’s outstanding bowling display in the fifth over changed the dynamics of the game, as he unleashed a brilliant spell of 5/17. He first bowled out South African skipper Aiden Markram with a deceptive wrong ‘un, before sending the stumps of well-set opener Reza Hendricks (24) tumbling with a cleverly disguised googly in the eighth over.
Marco Jansen was the next to succumb to Varun’s bowling onslaught in the 11th over, as he also lost his stumps. Varun continued his rampage by dismantling the South African middle order, taking the crucial wickets of Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller in successive deliveries during his final over, reducing the hosts to a challenging 66/6 by the 13th over.
Ravi Bishnoi chipped in with another vital wicket, removing Andile Simelane in the 16th over to leave South Africa precariously low at 86/7.
With 37 runs needed off the last four overs, the South African team found themselves in a tight spot. Yet, Gerald Coetzee’s swift contribution of 19 runs off just 9 balls revitalized their innings and provided the necessary momentum.
Tristan Stubbs, although initially cautious, played a pivotal role in securing victory by scoring 16 runs off Arshdeep Singh in the penultimate over, allowing South Africa to clinch the win with six balls to spare. His crucial 47 runs off 41 balls earned him the player of the match award.
The excitement continues with the third match of the India vs South Africa T20 series set to unfold at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Wednesday. The series will culminate with the final match at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Friday.

**Interview with Cricket Analyst Vikram Mehta Following India’s Disappointing Loss to South Africa**
**Interviewer:** Welcome, Vikram! Thank you for joining us to dissect the recent T20 match between India and South Africa. It was quite an unexpected outcome, with India losing by three wickets after a solid start to the series. What are your thoughts on India’s performance?
**Vikram Mehta:** Thank you for having me! Indeed, it was a surprising result. India came into this match with excellent momentum after their win in the opener. However, they stumbled early on, losing key wickets, including Sanju Samson without scoring. That kind of start really puts pressure on the middle order.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned the top order’s collapse. What do you think contributed to that swift downfall?
**Vikram Mehta:** The pitch at St George’s Park offered a bit of pace and bounce, but more importantly, the South African bowlers executed their plans brilliantly. They kept the pressure high, and as we saw, India’s famed top order, including Suryakumar Yadav and Abhishek Sharma, simply couldn’t cope. Losing three wickets for just 15 runs within four overs was a huge blow.
**Interviewer:** On the bowling side, Varun Chakravarthy had a spectacular performance, claiming five wickets. How pivotal was he in keeping India in the game?
**Vikram Mehta:** Varun was absolutely outstanding! His spell of 5 for 17 was crucial, and he showed great skill in taking wickets during the middle overs. He gave India hope, especially when South Africa seemed to be getting on top. However, even with his brilliance, the total India set just wasn’t enough to defend.
**Interviewer:** India finished with a modest total of 124 runs. What do you think they could have done differently in their innings?
**Vikram Mehta:** They needed to be more aggressive, especially in the last five overs. Hardik Pandya’s innings, while steady, wasn’t enough to lift the side into a competitive score. There were missed opportunities to rotate the strike and build partnerships, but unfortunately, they let it slip following that initial collapse.
**Interviewer:** With the series now level at 1-1, do you think this loss could impact India’s approach in the remaining matches?
**Vikram Mehta:** Definitely. It’s crucial for them to bounce back mentally. They need to assess their batting strategy and come out with a stronger mindset in the next match. Consistency is key, especially in a T20 series, and India will look to regain that winning form quickly.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Vikram, for sharing your insights! Let’s hope for a strong comeback from the Indian team in the next game.
**Vikram Mehta:** Thank you! Cricket is always full of surprises, and I’m looking forward to seeing how they respond.
