By the interval, you’d be forgiven for thinking Standard was less of a team and more of a charity—handing out goals like candy at a Halloween party.
The Second Half – More Goals and a Hint of Panic
- 51′ – Goal! Archie Brown adds insult to injury. 3-0, and suddenly it feels less like a game and more like a demolition derby.
- 59′ – Max Dean strikes again! 4-0! That ball went in with all the conviction of a kid shouting, “But I want to!” when told to go to bed!
- 89′ – Goal! Gilles De Meyer puts the cherry on top with a fifth. STANDARD? More like STANDBY, because they were completely paralyzed! 5-0!

KAA Gent takes the breather in our competition with a resounding victory. In the Planet Group arena, Ghent quickly took the lead, Standard then allowed themselves to be led to the slaughter and conceded another 4 goals. A blemish on the Ghent party evening was the incident with Noah Fadiga, who suddenly collapsed, but fortunately Ghent quickly came with “reassuring news”.
AA Gent – Standard in a nutshell
On September 29, against OH Leuven, it was the last time Max Dean scored, tonight he scored for two pots. With one great kick and one good look, the mini-Vardy helped Ghent to the big score.
Those who had hoped for Standard’s return were robbed of that dream six minutes into the second half. With a beautiful curl, Brown popped the books at him.
After half an hour, Noah Fadiga fell into the arms of coach Vrancken. Not because of his known heart problems, but as a result of a collision, the club reported afterwards. In any case, a scary image, but a moment later the Buffalo was able to stand up and walk to the locker room.
Football sometimes comes second, we realized halfway through the first half. Such a fall by Fadiga made people fear the worst, reminiscent of the incidents of Anthony Van Loo or Christian Erikssen. Fortunately, the Buffalo quickly turned right again and continued.
Having dealt with the most important thing, we could move on to the side issue. Ghent was already trying to throw away its doubts after five minutes, and Matthieu Epolo felt the pressure increasing on his shoulders again.

Ivan Leko saw his men wandering and hoped to get some experience into the team with Doumbia after the break. A wonderful curl from Brown pushed the match to the final decision after five minutes. On the hour mark, experienced Doumbia gave the ideal ball to Sonko with a particularly naive pass. The reborn Swede hit the crossbar for the second time of the evening, but Dean followed well and worked inside.
Ghent subsequently saw that it was good and, under the guidance of the audience, started playing free passes. No pressure, no effort from the visitors.
Vrancken rewarded Gilles De Meyer with a debut in the competition, with success. Thanks to Epolo, De Meyer secured the forfeit score. With a second mistake of the evening, the goalkeeper helped the ball over the back line, because De Meyer did not actually deliver more than a failed cross.
