ABI and CNseg Forge Climate Change Partnership Ahead of COP 30

Some significant global climate change partnership developments from the ABI for you;

In a strategic move aimed at fostering collaborative efforts on pressing issues such as climate change and cyber risks, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the Brazilian Insurance Confederation (CNseg) have formalized their partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This agreement not only intensifies their mutual commitment to addressing climate change challenges but also establishes a framework for sharing best practices and successful case studies from their respective (re)insurance markets in Brazil and the UK. Notably, the MoU underscores their intention to work in tandem in anticipation of the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP) 30, which is scheduled to take place in Brazil in 2025.

The ABI serves as the principal voice of the UK’s insurance and long-term savings sector, representing over 300 member companies, including both well-known household brands and specialized providers. Meanwhile, CNseg advocates for the insurance and personal pension sectors in Brazil, striving to advance the market’s development and ensuring it aligns with the needs and aspirations of the Brazilian populace.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed during the Brazil-UK Insurance Forum, a notable event co-hosted by the ABI and CNseg at the Brazilian embassy on Wednesday, October 30. This agreement further emphasizes their unwavering dedication to promoting cooperation, exchanging insights, and sharing pertinent information on issues of mutual interest.

Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Jonathan Reynolds, stated: “The insurance industry is vital in helping businesses and individuals recover from setbacks, and to building the long-term resilience and stability which underpins economic growth.”

“I welcome this exemplary cross-border collaboration between British and Brazilian counterparts. Sharing their knowledge and expertise will ensure their practices evolve to support our transition to clean energy and a low carbon economy.”

Hannah Gurga, ABI Director General, commented: “Climate change and the global insurance protection gap are areas that both the ABI and CNseg are committed to tackling. In the run up to COP 30, I’m delighted to be marking our ongoing relationship with CNseg with this vital MoU to enhance our efforts to improve resilience in the face of emerging risks.”

Dyogo Oliveira, President of CNseg, remarked: “The insurance sector’s participation in the climate agenda is vital. Our core business is to assess risks based on data and propose solutions to mitigate these risks. This beginning of a partnership between CNseg and ABI will allow us to create a fruitful exchange of information and processes for risk mitigation projects associated with climate change.”
