Lahore Traffic Police Spokesperson Rana Arif told Independent Urdu that the incident took place in Data Darbar, a densely populated area of Lahore, where a rickshaw driver took out petrol from his rickshaw, poured it on his body, set himself on fire, and others nearby. Clung to the traffic officer.
He further said that both the rickshaw driver and the traffic police officer were shifted to the hospital with injuries.
Rana Arif said that the traffic officials were asking the rickshaw drivers to remove their vehicles from the nine parking zones near Data Darbar and park them in the Mickey parking zone. Other rickshaw drivers moved their rickshaws away but one driver was adamant not to do so.’
The spokesman further said that the traffic warden proceeded to ask the said rickshaw driver to remove his vehicle from there, but the rickshaw driver got down from the rickshaw and removed his shirt, after which he took out the petrol bottle lying in the rickshaw and committed suicide. But poured petrol and set himself on fire.
He further said that ‘after setting his body on fire, he ran away and hugged a traffic warden named Waqar from behind.’

According to Rana Arif: ‘The driver’s body was on fire and when he hugged Waqar, he pushed the driver back, causing him to fall to the ground, but by then the traffic warden’s clothes had also caught fire. By which his neck, arms and chest were burnt.’
The spokesman said that other traffic officials nearby extinguished the fire on the bodies of the rickshaw driver and the official and both were immediately shifted to Mayo Hospital.
He also said that ‘according to preliminary information, the rickshaw driver was suffering from severe mental stress for some time, the reasons of which include the death of his child due to electrocution a few months ago and bankruptcy.’
According to Arif Rana, 40% of the traffic assistant’s body was burnt, while 20% of the rickshaw driver’s body was burnt.
The traffic warden has been shifted to the burn unit of Jinnah Hospital for better treatment as per the instructions of Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Amara Athar.
CTO Amara Athar reached the hospital and treated the burnt warden and expressed regret over the incident.
According to the traffic police spokesperson, legal action will be taken against this move of the rickshaw driver.
