When Feroze Khan saw the Tamil language film ‘Naikaan’ inspired by the Hollywood classic ‘The Godfather’, he thought that there could be no better film to remake.
The film was also unusual, with Kamal Haasan playing the lead role in this Tamil language film directed by Mani Ratnam. The story was about a man who could actually be called Robin Hood. Feeling deprived and disenfranchised from childhood is such that one is forced to choose the path of crime.
Then one day he becomes the uncrowned king of the crime world and rules everyone’s heart. The reason is simply that ‘Diyawan’ means compassionate and sincere. When the Messiah of the poor stands with them in every suffering.
When Feroze Khan learned that Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra were also eager to buy the rights to the Tamil-language film, he paid the highest amount for the rights to make it in Hindi.
Two years earlier his another film ‘Jambaaz’ had taken everyone by storm, so in 1988 he was inspired by the Tamil language film ‘Diyawan’ and he had the main character in mind. There was none other than Vinod Khanna.
Feroze Khan had always had a habit of playing the roles that felt best to him, unlike other actors. It was not only that if the capital has been invested to become a hero on the screen, that’s why they decided to make Vinod Khanna ‘Diyawan’.
Vinod Khanna and Feroze Khan had their own special friendship and it got stronger when they worked together in ‘Qurbani’. That’s why Vinod Khanna blindly signed the film on Feroze Khan’s offer.
He was sure that if Feroze Khan cast him, it would definitely be a hit as the Tamil film had also created a sensation in South India.
Feroze Khan wanted to make the film as fast as possible, so he chose Vinod Khanna, Aditya Panjoli and Anuradha Patel in addition to himself.
Now the problem was facing Vinod Khanna’s heroine. It was a short role, no actress was ready to go ahead and play it. One of the reasons for this was that it had a bold kiss scene of the heroine, which the actresses were apologizing for.
In such a situation, this role came to Madhuri Dixit. Till then she had no hit film and ‘Acid’ which made Madhuri Madhuri was still under completion. That was the reason why they didn’t delay paying him because they needed a big ‘break’. His wish was fulfilled with this film.
Feroze Khan had planned to mirror ‘Diyawan’ in the same schedule. It will be the first film of its kind, which was completed in just two months. Composer Lakshmi Kant Pyare composed four songs in one go.
When ‘Diyawan’ was completed, Feroze Khan felt that there should be a song in it that describes the pain and suffering of Dayawan i.e. Vinod Khanna, which he endured from childhood to old age. That’s why he used to go to composer Lakshmi Kant Pyarelal and request him to compose a similar song.
The musician duo called the songwriter Andivar and told him about Feroze Khan’s problem. They also sat with their heads together.

Meanwhile, Feroze Khan was waiting for the song to be ready so that he could release ‘Diyawan’ in cinemas. Finally, one day, Andivar wrote the lyrics and approached the composer Lakshmikanth Pyarelal, who composed the tune overnight.
Mohammad Aziz was chosen to sing, who sang ‘Dil Tera Kisene Pada’ with such depth that when it was played to Feroze Khan, he swooned. The anguish, the emotions, the pain and the sorrow they wanted in the song, they got it. In ‘Diyawan’, this song was mirrored, while it was also used in the background on several occasions.
Director Feroze Khan now released ‘Diyawan’ in theaters on 29th September 1988, when the boards of Housefull also started appearing. Vinod Khanna also acted in such a way that alarm bells rang for many contemporary actors.
Many believed that Vinod Khanna, who had been away from the film world for a long time, made a comeback in Indian films through this film.
‘Diyawan’ was the most successful production of the year, which also had hit songs. The song ‘Dil Tera Kisne Bade’ was a highlight of the film, especially in the final moments.
Interestingly, Feroze Khan did not work with Madhuri Dixit or Vinod Khanna in any other film after this film. Madhuri Dixit, who became Vinod Khanna’s heroine in ‘Diyawan’, came to limelight almost nine years after that film with his son Akshay Khanna as his heroine in ‘Mohabbat’.
However, even today ‘Diyawan’ is considered as a classic film.

**Interview with Feroze Khan on the Making of ‘Diyawan’**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Feroze. You saw the Tamil film ‘Naikaan’ and thought it was perfect for a Hindi remake. What about its story resonated with you?
**Feroze Khan:** Thank you for having me! ’Naikaan’ had a unique story that truly moved me. The character represented a Robin Hood figure, someone who transitions from being marginalized to becoming a leader of the crime world. This journey, combined with the character’s compassion towards the underprivileged, struck a chord with me.
**Interviewer:** You mentioned that you outbid Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra for the rights. What made you so determined to secure this project?
**Feroze Khan:** I believed in the potential of ‘Naikaan’ right from the start. It had created a massive impact in South India, and I felt that bringing this story to a wider audience in Hindi could be a game-changer. Plus, I already had Vinod Khanna in mind for the lead, knowing he was the perfect choice to embody this complex character.
**Interviewer:** Speaking of Vinod Khanna, your friendship with him played a significant role in your decision-making. Could you elaborate on that?
**Feroze Khan:** Absolutely. Vinod and I had a strong bond, especially after our successful collaboration in ‘Qurbani.’ I knew that if I cast him in ‘Diyawan’, it would resonate with the audience. His trust in me and the story made the decision easy for both of us.
**Interviewer:** You faced challenges in casting the heroine. Can you tell us more about that?
**Feroze Khan:** Yes, it was quite a challenge. The role required a bold approach and involved a significant kiss scene, which made many actresses hesitant. However, when I approached Madhuri Dixit, she was looking for that breakthrough role. I sensed her potential and knew she would bring something special to the film.
**Interviewer:** ‘Diyawan’ was completed in a remarkably short period. What was your strategy for such a quick turnaround?
**Feroze Khan:** The plan was straightforward: we had to keep the momentum going. I surrounded myself with a talented crew, including Lakshmi Kant Pyarelal for music, ensuring everything was harmoniously aligned. The pressure drove us to be efficient while maintaining quality.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, can you share a bit about the emotional depth you wanted to convey through the music in ‘Diyawan’?
**Feroze Khan:** Music plays a crucial role in any film, especially in conveying emotions. I wanted a song that encapsulated the pain and struggles of Vinod’s character from childhood to adulthood. Thanks to the incredible collaboration with the composer and lyricist, we managed to create something truly special that resonated with audiences.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Feroze. Your insights into ’Diyawan’ and the challenges you faced in its creation are fascinating.
**Feroze Khan:** Thank you for having me. I hope ‘Diyawan’ continues to resonate with people just as ‘Naikaan’ did.
