The Minister of Energy and Environment, Kostas Skrekas, announced the new government subsidies on tariffs for electricity consumption that will come into effect in April.
The minister emphasized that energy prices are on a path of significant de-escalation.
The subsidy for domestic consumers:
- For monthly consumption of up to 500 kilowatt hours, the subsidy is 15 euros per megawatt hour. This category concerns 90% of households in Greece.
- Those with a monthly consumption of over 500 kilowatt-hours will receive the same subsidy if they reduce their average daily energy consumption by 15% compared to the corresponding last year.
For households included in the Social Household Tariff (COT) the subsidy amounts to €54/MWh.
Regarding the subsidies for farmers, the subsidy also amounts to €15/MWh.
Except business.
The Minister of Energy dropped the ball to citizens to take advantage of our country’s climate and the Sun to save energy. The minister said that two programs have come, Photovoltaics on the Roof and Recycle-change water heater for 120,000 households. Consumption for hot water will be reduced by 65%
With the photovoltaic program, households will save 75% of electricity and farmers 60%. The savings will even reach up to 3,000 euros per year.
Finally, the minister announced that two more programs are coming, the Save-renovate for young people and the new save 2023.
The charges of the providers for April
Significantly lower electricity tariffs for April were announced by most electricity suppliers following the de-escalation of prices on the Greek Energy exchange and the international market.
In several cases the prices are already lower than the target of 15-16 cents per kilowatt hour which is the target price after the implementation of the government subsidies which are expected to be announced in the coming days.
The detailed charges for April (indicative commercial programs per supplier) are:
PPC:
For consumption up to 500 kilowatt hours, 16.5 cents per kilowatt hour (from 19.5 in March)
For higher consumption, 17.7 cents per kilowatt hour (from 20.7)
Night tariff: 12.4 cents per kilowatt hour (from 15.4).
Protergia: 14 minutes per kilowatt hour,.
Heron Protect: 18.9 cents per kilowatt hour.

**Interview with Kostas Skrekas, Minister of Energy and Environment**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Minister Skrekas. You recently announced new government subsidies for electricity tariffs that will take effect in April. Can you share more about what these subsidies will look like for domestic consumers?
**Kostas Skrekas:** Absolutely, and thank you for having me. For domestic consumers, we’re providing a subsidy of €15 per megawatt hour for those with monthly consumption of up to 500 kilowatt-hours. This support is aimed at approximately 90% of households in Greece. Additionally, for households consuming more than 500 kilowatt-hours a month, they can still receive the same subsidy if they manage to reduce their average daily energy consumption by 15% compared to last year.
**Interviewer:** That sounds encouraging for many families. What about those in vulnerable situations, such as households under the Social Household Tariff?
**Kostas Skrekas:** For these households, we are offering a significantly higher subsidy of €54 per megawatt hour. This is part of our commitment to support those who may be most affected by energy costs.
**Interviewer:** You also mentioned subsidies for farmers. How does that plan work?
**Kostas Skrekas:** Yes, farmers will receive the same subsidy of €15 per megawatt hour as domestic consumers, which is crucial for helping them manage their energy costs during these challenging times.
**Interviewer:** You’ve also encouraged citizens to utilize renewable energy. Can you elaborate on the photovoltaic programs you mentioned?
**Kostas Skrekas:** Of course. Our programs, namely the Photovoltaics on the Roof and the Recycle-change water heater initiative, aim to empower households to harness our abundant sunlight. With these programs, households can potentially save up to 75% on their electricity bills, while farmers could see savings of around 60%. This could translate to up to €3,000 in annual savings—substantial support for families and agricultural operations alike.
**Interviewer:** Are there additional initiatives in the pipeline for energy efficiency and renovation?
**Kostas Skrekas:** Yes, we are excited to introduce two additional programs: ‘Save-renovate’ aimed at young people and a new initiative dubbed ‘Save 2023’. These programs will further support improvements in energy efficiency in homes across Greece.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, you mentioned that electricity tariffs are set to decrease in April. How significant of a reduction should consumers expect?
**Kostas Skrekas:** The upcoming electricity tariffs for April will be significantly lower, as announced by most suppliers. This is part of our comprehensive strategy to ensure that energy becomes more affordable for all citizens.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Minister Skrekas, for sharing these important updates with us today. We appreciate your time and insights.
**Kostas Skrekas:** Thank you for having me. Let’s look forward to a greener and more sustainable future together.
