Rotterdam: A Sky Scraping Humour Trip
Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the fabulous city of Rotterdam – where there are more cranes overhead than pigeons on the street! Yes, even on a cloudless day, and let me tell you, it does seem to get a bit unpleasant with all those towering constructions reaching a staggering two hundred and seventy-five meters. We might as well call it the city’s very own version of the ‘Tower of Babel,’ minus the language barriers – or at least the ones that can’t be solved with a good dose of Dutch directness!
Now, don’t get me wrong, Rotterdam’s skyline is becoming so prestigious that it could host a beauty pageant for skyscrapers. Forget Miss America; we’ve got Miss Maasstad on the runway! It’s not quite Babylonian proportions yet, but the way those buildings are popping up, you might want to start preparing for a housing crisis… in the clouds!
And who could forget the vibrant sports culture? If we look at the gracefully dribbling left winger of Feyenoord, they’ve got more moves than your local dance crew! But let’s not pretend this city isn’t multi-talented. Oh no, we’ve got a boxing gold medalist from the Olympic Games lighting up the scene, and a critically acclaimed poet as well. Talk about a jack of all trades! You can’t help but think that Rotterdam’s talent pool is about as crowded as the harbor during peak hours.
Now, dear readers, as I gaze upon this city, I can’t help but be reminded of the Augustinian canon Erasmus, telling us to clean up after ourselves rather than engaging in small talk. Rotterdam’s very own mantra could be: ‘Don’t talk, just clean the dirty dishes!’ And let me tell you, there’s a good chance that thought was born after a wild night out involving too many bitterballen and jenever!
But let’s take it up a notch! What really pops into my mind when I think of Rotterdam is not the grandeur of a skyscraper but rather a twenty-year-old boy cruising around with his eccentric great uncle in a middle-class car that has clearly seen better days. Picture this: a mythical ‘bitch shaker’ while bumping tunes from the 90s, heading to a nineteenth-century zoo – the only place where wild animals are the least bizarre characters in the vehicle! Ah, nostalgia at its finest!
If I could be a dedicated Flemish giant holder (I’m still unsure what that entails, but it sounds impressive), I would prance around, getting acquainted with exotic animals. Here, I remember a cricket telling someone about the imposing rhinoceros – “Look! There goes the ‘zinc cutter’ up ‘kneiter’!” – a phrase my uncle keeps reviving every year as soon as Sinterklaas gets his ‘miter’ on. Wise words… from someone who seems to think ‘zinc cutter’ should actually be on a T-shirt!
So yes, Blijdorp is true, storming heaven with its skyscrapers nearby, yet somehow it still manages to blend nature with urban life. It’s like they decided, “Why not have a wild party with nature and then invite some skyscrapers to crash the bash?” For me, that unusual combo became the essence of Rotterdam. A city that makes you feel as close to nature as you can while still being within a stone’s throw of the nearest Starbucks.

Rotterdam
In the vibrant city of Rotterdam, where architectural innovation continues to reshape its skyline, a new prestigious tower is in development that is set to soar to an impressive height of two hundred and seventy-five meters upon completion. This striking structure promises to redefine the cityscape, reaching for the clouds in a way that no other landing location has.
But it’s not the un-Dutch skyline that one thinks of—rather, it evokes a sense of Babylonian proportions, inviting contemplation when one reflects on Maasstad, as it is affectionately known.
Blijdorp, a cherished destination, remains a place where modern skyscrapers rise majestically nearby, yet it embodies a closeness to nature that has become synonymous with Rotterdam for me.
To its knees!” It’s a line my uncle would joke about every year during Sinterklaas, elevating cringe-worthy moments to the status of family legend.
And let me tell you, amidst all those stunning skyscrapers of Rotterdam, there lies the beauty of nature — like Blijdorp Zoo. It’s a perfect blend of urban life and wildlife, a refreshing escape where you can see ‘heaven’ and nature, all rolled into one. To me, that’s what defines Rotterdam: a city in touching distance with the lushness of wildlife amidst the towering concrete jungle.
Interview with Rotterdam Tour Guide, Mark van Dijk
Editor: Mark, thank you for joining us today! Your city is becoming known for its impressive skyline. How do you feel about the rapid development in Rotterdam?
Mark: Thank you for having me! The skyline is indeed growing at an astonishing rate. It’s exciting to see such ambitious projects; it feels as if we are transforming into a city of the future while still keeping our character intact.
Editor: Some people say that with all these skyscrapers, Rotterdam is resembling a modern ‘Tower of Babel’. What’s your take on that?
Mark: (laughs) It’s certainly an amusing comparison! Each new tower represents the diversity of our populace. Rather than confusion, it showcases our unity — different cultures coming together in one skyline. Plus, construction here is nothing if not direct — we’re just getting on with it!
Editor: We’ve seen a majestic mix of talents arise from the city too — from sports to art. How do you think these contribute to Rotterdam’s spirit?
Mark: Absolutely! This tapestry of talent is what makes Rotterdam vibrant. The arts and sports culture keeps us forward-thinking and engages our community, fostering pride. We’re a city that thrives on creativity and resilience.
Editor: Lastly, inspired by the snippet about nostalgia and family traditions, do you have any personal memories that link you to Rotterdam’s past?
Mark: Oh, definitely! I fondly recall visiting Blijdorp Zoo as a child, much like what you mentioned. Those moments spent with family, exploring the wonder of nature right in the midst of the city, remain close to my heart. It embodies that balance we strive for in Rotterdam—urban life intertwined with the beauty of nature.
Editor: Thank you so much, Mark, for sharing your insights! It seems Rotterdam is not just growing in height but in heart and spirit as well.
Mark: Thank you! Cheers to that — may Rotterdam continue to surprise and inspire!
