**Interview with Dr. Emma Thorne, Nutritionist and Author**
**Host:** Welcome, Dr. Thorne! Thank you for joining us today. With the latest discussions around sugar consumption and health, particularly concerning candy, can you explain the findings from the study published in 1998 regarding candy and longevity?
**Dr. Thorne:** Thank you for having me! The study highlights some interesting points about candy consumption and its impact on longevity. Specifically, while it suggested potential health benefits linked to chocolate, like reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer, it also found that greater consumption of candy generally did not correlate with improved health outcomes or longevity.
**Host:** That’s intriguing. So, does this mean we can indulge in chocolate without guilt, while we should be cautious about other candies?
**Dr. Thorne:** In moderation, yes! Dark chocolate, in particular, contains antioxidants and may provide some health benefits. However, many other types of candy are high in sugar and offer little nutritional value, which can lead to negative health effects over time.
**Host:** And with the recent emphasis on less sugary candies in the market, what should consumers consider when choosing their sweets?
**Dr. Thorne:** It’s important to look at the overall nutritional profile. Lower sugar content can be a positive, but it’s crucial to consider ingredients and find options with healthier alternatives like natural sweeteners or those that include beneficial nutrients.
**Host:** Great advice! what message do you want to convey to our viewers regarding candy consumption?
**Dr. Thorne:** Enjoying candy is part of a balanced lifestyle. Focus on moderation and make mindful choices to ensure that your treats contribute positively to your overall health.
