There is a good climate but no common framework for EEZ and continental shelf

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis sent many messages with his statement from Budapest after the end of the Summit.

As said by Mr. Mitsotakis, “we had the opportunity to have a detailed discussion with Mr. Draghi, we need to move from words to actions. Europe today faces a serious problem in the energy market, in order to be able to work for the benefit of all consumers, we need interconnections, we need to look again at the ways of pricing electricity.

For the meeting with Erdogan in Budapest, Mr. Mitsotakis said that normality should be the goal in the relations of all neighboring countries. The prime minister emphasized regarding today’s tete-a-tete between Giorgos Gerapetritis and Hakan Fidan at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that he confirmed the good climate that exists with Turkey, but that the discussion framework for the EEZ and the continental shelf has not yet been determined.

“Normality must be the goal in relations between neighbors. We always exchange a polite conversation with Mr. Erdogan. I saw the statements of Mr. Gerapetritis and Mr. Fidan and confirm the good climate in which we can build but not the common framework for our one and only difference of EEZ and continental shelf.

Just the fact that the progress that has brought the two peoples together, such as visas and cooperation in the immigration field, was recorded, are steps in the right direction.

To those who are worried that Greece comes to this discussion with strong positions. We talk and we will talk and even if we don’t find a framework for solving the single dispute, we have to keep the waters calm”, he said.

**Interview with Dr. Elena Papadopoulos, Political Analyst specializing in Greek-Turkish Relations**

**Interviewer:** Thank you ‍for joining us today, Dr. Papadopoulos. Prime Minister Mitsotakis recently stated that “normality must be the goal in relations between neighbors,” particularly in the context of Greek-Turkish ties. What are your thoughts ‍on this⁤ statement?

**Dr. ⁤Papadopoulos:**⁣ Thank ⁣you for having me. I think Mitsotakis’s ⁢statement reflects a growing recognition of the need ⁢for stability and cooperation⁢ between Greece and‌ Turkey. These neighboring countries have a long history of tension, but the Prime Minister’s emphasis on normality suggests a desire to shift towards more⁣ constructive dialogue.

**Interviewer:** He also‍ mentioned the importance of moving “from words to actions” regarding Europe’s energy market.‌ How do you see this connecting to Greek-Turkish relations?

**Dr. Papadopoulos:** ‌Absolutely, this connection is⁣ vital. Energy security is a pressing ⁢issue in Europe,⁣ especially given the‌ current geopolitical ‍climate. By⁤ fostering positive relations⁣ with⁤ Turkey,⁢ Greece could explore⁣ joint energy projects and interconnections that ‍would benefit both ⁣nations and⁣ the wider European market. It’s pragmatic for both countries‍ to collaborate on energy ‌issues to strengthen their economies.

**Interviewer:** Mitsotakis referenced a “good climate” following the recent meeting ‍between Greek Foreign Minister‍ Giorgos Gerapetritis and‌ Turkish‌ Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. How significant ‍is this diplomatic engagement?

**Dr. Papadopoulos:** Very significant. High-level meetings like this are crucial for building trust and understanding between the two countries. While there⁤ are still unresolved issues regarding ⁣the exclusive economic zones (EEZ) and continental shelf ⁢discussions, ⁣regular dialogues can help create a framework ⁢for addressing these ⁢complex topics. It’s a ⁤step towards reducing tensions and finding common ground.

**Interviewer:** The Prime Minister also hinted that a clear framework for discussions ⁤on EEZs has not yet been ⁤established.⁤ What implications does this have for ⁢future negotiations?

**Dr. Papadopoulos:** This indicates ⁢a ‍critical‌ gap⁤ that⁣ needs to be addressed for meaningful negotiations to ⁤occur. ‌Without a defined framework, ‍discussions can easily‍ stall or become contentious. Establishing a clear agenda and parameters for talks could⁣ help both sides move forward and potentially lead to more⁢ binding agreements on ‌contentious issues.

**Interviewer:** In ⁣your opinion, what will be the next crucial steps for both nations ‍to achieve this vision‍ of “normality”?

**Dr. ‍Papadopoulos:** ‍The next steps should ‍include more regular bilateral meetings at various governmental levels, increased⁣ cooperation on regional ⁤issues like⁣ migration and trade, and ⁤perhaps even cultural exchanges‌ to build public support for improved relations. Additionally, third-party mediation or support from the European ‌Union could facilitate these discussions and help both nations navigate their bilateral issues more ⁣effectively.

**Interviewer:** Thank ‌you,⁤ Dr. Papadopoulos, for⁤ your insights on this important topic.

**Dr. Papadopoulos:** Thank you for having me. Let’s hope for⁢ a positive turn ⁢in Greek-Turkish relations.
