Cooperation and coordination between ADMIE and DEDDIE under the supervision of RAE for the management of high RES production in periods of low electricity consumption, such as the one we are going through, was agreed in a teleconference of representatives of the three entities that took place today, Friday 31/3/2023.
As pointed out, the high production of RES combined with the low demand observed due to weather conditions in spring, autumn or during holidays creates conditions of instability in the electrical system. To prevent such phenomena they agreed RES production cuts both by ADMIE and DEDDIE, depending on the capabilities of each Operator, which will be carried out more during hours of intense sunshine and/or strong winds during spring and autumn characterized by particularly low demand for electricity energy, such as the upcoming holidays.
In addition, if deemed necessary, ADMIE will be able to proceed to short-term restrictions on electricity importsafter consultation with neighboring administrators.
Finally, care is taken to maintain it at all times enough electrical space for adequate backups from conventional units that will ensure the stable operation of the System.
According to the relevant information:
-During the teleconference, ADMIE officials described in detail the current particularly difficult operating conditions of the System and the measures implemented by the Administrator to deal with the challenges amid the rapidly increasing RES penetration. ADMIE already has sufficient methodology and reliable systems for the management of renewable electricity generation, while it has implemented the Energy Transition Projects Program.
– The officials of DEDDIE respectively described the existing possibilities of cuts in Medium and Low Voltage, and pointed out that the Distribution Network Operator will immediately proceed with the development of additional tools for the management of electricity generation from RES. It was agreed that a rejection of the production potential of RES Stations will be implemented, with the size of power and duration of disconnection to be determined by the relevant orders of the ADMIE.
Whenever deemed necessary, RAE will convene the Crisis Management Team, with the participation of the two Administrators, for regular monitoring and control of the situation. It was also decided to make all the necessary changes to the regulatory framework in order to anticipate these new conditions presented in the System.
Finally, all parties agreed that with the coordinated management of the problem by all co-competent agencies, the situation is brought under control to ensure the shielding of the electrical system in conditions of low consumption and high RES production.

**Interview with Dr. Elena Karagoulatou, Energy Policy Expert**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Karagoulatou. Can you provide us with a brief overview of the recent agreement between ADMIE, DEDDIE, and RAE regarding the management of high Renewable Energy Source (RES) production?
**Dr. Karagoulatou:** Thank you for having me. The recent teleconference, which took place on March 31, 2023, marked an important step in enhancing our electrical grid’s stability. The cooperation between ADMIE, DEDDIE, and RAE is crucial, particularly during those periods when high RES production coincides with low electricity demand, such as we see in spring, autumn, and during holidays.
**Interviewer:** What are some specific challenges that arise during these low-demand periods?
**Dr. Karagoulatou:** When we experience a high production of renewable energy but simultaneously low consumption, it creates instability in the electrical system. This mismatch can lead to overproduction, which necessitates response measures to maintain grid stability. That’s why the agreement includes measures like RES production cuts, especially during peak production hours characterized by strong winds or intense sunshine.
**Interviewer:** Could you explain the significance of implementing RES production cuts and what that entails?
**Dr. Karagoulatou:** Certainly! RES production cuts mean that both ADMIE and DEDDIE will reduce the amount of energy generated from renewable sources during times of excessive generation. This is dependent on their capabilities and aims to prevent grid overload. It’s particularly important to implement these cuts effectively during periods of low electricity demand, ensuring that we maintain a balanced and stable energy supply.
**Interviewer:** What is the role of short-term restrictions on electricity imports in this context?
**Dr. Karagoulatou:** If the situation becomes critical, ADMIE may impose short-term restrictions on electricity imports. This decision will be made after consulting with neighboring energy suppliers. This measure is essential to prevent system instability and ensures that our domestic energy resources are prioritized while maintaining sufficient electrical capacity in the grid.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, how do you see this collaborative approach impacting Greece’s energy landscape in the future?
**Dr. Karagoulatou:** This teamwork between ADMIE, DEDDIE, and RAE sets a positive precedent for coordinated energy management in Greece. By effectively managing RES production while addressing demand fluctuations, we can enhance our energy system’s resilience and efficiency. It also strengthens our commitment to integrating more renewable energy sources, aligning with our long-term sustainability goals.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for your insights, Dr. Karagoulatou. It’s clear that these measures are crucial for the smooth operation of our electrical system.
**Dr. Karagoulatou:** Thank you for having me. It’s an exciting time for Greece’s energy sector as we continue on our path towards a greener future.
