World Freedom Day is celebrated every November 9. This day is celebrated to honor the long struggle of people in various parts of the world to obtain freedom and human rights, especially in countries that have experienced restrictions on freedom, such as the countries of the former Eastern Bloc.
This commemoration seeks to remind the world community of the importance of freedom and human rights.
History of World Freedom Day
World Freedom Day was first established in 2001 by the then President of the United States, George W. Bush. World Freedom Day was created to commemorate the fall of the Berlin Wall after World War II.

This warning is not about the collapse of the wall, but the meaning behind its fall. The fall of the wall marked the end of communism throughout Eastern and Central Europe, ensuring freedom for all.
After World War II ended, Germany was divided into East Germany and West Germany. West Germany was occupied by America, France and England, while East Germany became the German Democratic Republic occupied by the Soviet Union. East Germany gained status as an independent country in 1949, and the city of Berlin became part of Soviet-controlled Germany.
A wall was built to prevent the migration of people from East Berlin to West Berlin and other parts of Western Europe. From 1961 to 1989, an estimated 5,000 people managed to escape across the Berlin Wall. More than 100 people died in the process.

In 1989, travel restrictions in East Germany became looser, leading thousands of impatient people to climb the walls and pound on them with chisels and hammers. The Berlin Wall finally eroded little by little and fell on November 9, 1989. One year later, Germany became one region again.
The fall of the Berlin Wall was not only an important event for Germany, but a symbol of the triumph of the values of freedom, democracy and human rights in the world.
Over time, World Freedom Day also began to be celebrated in various countries as a form of support and solidarity with the struggles of people who are still confined by authoritarian regimes.
