A new six-year framework contract with the Naval Group regarding the Follow On Support of FDI Belharra frigates was signed by Salamis Shipyards on Tuesday (5.11.24), in the context of their participation in the international defense exhibition “EURONAVAL 2024” in Paris.
As announced today Friday (8.11.24), the new contract provides for the maintenance and repair of the whale, the superstructure of all the systems of the Belharra frigates within the framework of their piping networks, as well as any work that may be required for their upgrade – modification in the future.
The contract was signed by the managing director of Salamina Shipyards Dr. Georgios Koros and the Managing Director of Naval Group Hellas Benoit Chapalain, in the presence of the Ambassador of Greece to France Dimitrios Zevelakis, the General Director of the General Directorate of Defense Forces Major General Ioannis Bouras, the president and director of Naval Group Pierre Eric Pommellet ), Procurement director Anne Quillon and its president SEKPY Anastasios Rozolis.
The CEO of Salamina Shipyards Mr. G.Koros stated:
“I had the honor and pleasure to sign the contract to extend the cooperation of the Salamis Shipyards with the Naval Group for the FDI HN program and in the field of further Support of the ships during their Service in the PN after their accession. The extension of our cooperation is a practical confirmation of the high quality project standards offered by the Salamina shipyards in programs of high demands and cutting edge technologies.
We feel particularly proud to participate in the FDI frigate program which is a turning point for the Greek shipbuilding industry, as for the first time Greece exports and participates in a defense program of a similar size for the Greek Navy as well as for another country’s Navy. Let’s hope that soon we will participate in the construction of the 4th Greek FDI”.
It is worth noting that relatively recently the Salamina Shipyards had extended the cooperation with the Naval Group for the construction project of the third French frigate which follows in the production line, after the third Greek frigate FORMION.
It is recalled that the cooperation of the shipyards with Naval Group was finalized with the signing of the relevant contracts during EuroNaval in Paris in 2022, following the 2-year (two-year) audit carried out by Naval Group in our country.
What does the agreement between Salamina Shipyards and Naval Group provide for?
This collaboration with the Naval Group foresees the shipyards’ participation in the construction of five sections (blocks) of the hull and the superstructure, for a total of up to 6 FDI frigates.
Already in February of this year, the Salamina Shipyards have delivered the 5 pre-equipped sections (blocks) of the third Greek FDI HN Formion, while correspondingly in July the blocks for the second French frigate of the program, which is being built at the Lorient shipyard, were delivered.
The project, in addition to cutting, shaping, assembling, welding and erecting the sections, also requires the manufacture, installation and alignment of critical equipment for the operational profile of the frigates, with absolute fidelity to specifications.
The project, in addition to the construction of the sections with a special high-demand steel alloy DH36, includes the construction of key systems, such as the base of the main gun, the bow thruster, the helicopter hangar and their peripheral systems, among others, at the Salamina Shipyards, which fully completed the project, which proves the completely successful transfer of technology and the specialized knowledge and capabilities of the Salamina Shipyards.
At this point it is underlined that the percentage of completeness of the pre-equipment of the blocks achieved by the Salamina shipyards reaches 80.4%, which is one of the highest percentages achieved, as stressed by sources with full knowledge of the shipbuilding processes.
The combination of the many years of knowledge and experience of the Salamina Shipyards in demanding and specialized projects and the know-how transferred to Greece by the Naval Group for a project of high technology and requirements that until now had not existed in our country, now consolidates special knowledge and skills with the similar certifications that the Salamina Shipyards now have.
Salamina Shipyards belong to a “specialized” and rare category of shipyards, those highly specialized in complex and high added value projects, which require high technical know-how and an overall culture of quality. This, together with a track record of successful delivery of similar projects, within schedule, budget and to high quality standards, sets them apart significantly from other Yards.
Salamina Shipyards is a specially designed, modern and flexible shipbuilding unit, which has been active internationally in new constructions and specialized projects for over 40 years. They have carried out pioneering projects at a pan-European and global level in the field of commercial shipping and the defense of both Greece and other NATO member states.

**Interview with Dr. Georgios Koros, Managing Director of Salamina Shipyards**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Koros. Congratulations on the recent signing of the six-year framework contract with the Naval Group. Can you tell us what this contract entails for Salamina Shipyards?
**Dr. Georgios Koros:** Thank you for having me. The contract we signed outlines our commitment to providing maintenance and repair services for the FDI Belharra frigates over the coming years. This includes managing the superstructure systems, piping networks, and any necessary future upgrades or modifications required for the ships during their service with the Greek Navy and potentially with other navies as well.
**Interviewer:** This agreement is a significant step for both Salamina Shipyards and the Greek shipbuilding industry. How do you view this partnership with the Naval Group?
**Dr. Koros:** It’s a pivotal moment for us. This collaboration not only affirms our shipyard’s capability to meet high project standards but also strengthens Greece’s role in international defense programs. For the first time, Greece is not just a participant, but actively exporting technology and know-how in defense shipbuilding, which is a remarkable achievement for our industry.
**Interviewer:** The FDI program is ambitious, to say the least. Can you elaborate on Salamina Shipyards’ specific contributions to the FDI frigate project?
**Dr. Koros:** Certainly. Our shipyards are responsible for constructing five sections of the hull and superstructure for up to six FDI frigates. We have already delivered pre-equipped sections for the third Greek frigate and the second French frigate under this program. It’s a complex task that involves precise cutting, shaping, welding, and assembling, alongside the installation of crucial operational equipment like the main gun base and helicopter hangars.
**Interviewer:** That’s impressive. What distinguishes Salamina Shipyards in this industry and enables you to maintain such high standards?
**Dr. Koros:** Our success stems from years of experience in specialized projects combined with the advanced technology and know-how transferred to us by Naval Group. The skills we’ve developed in handling complex tasks, such as working with high-demand steel alloys, have allowed us to achieve an 80.4% completeness rate in pre-equipping the blocks—one of the highest in our sector.
**Interviewer:** Reflecting on the future, what are your hopes for this partnership and the Greek shipbuilding industry?
**Dr. Koros:** I am optimistic that this collaboration will lead to more opportunities, including our involvement in the construction of the 4th Greek FDI frigate. Our goal is to establish Greece as a vital player in the defense shipbuilding sector, enhancing our reputation and capabilities on an international scale.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Koros. Your insights into the Salamina Shipyards and the FDI frigate program are enlightening. We look forward to seeing how this partnership evolves in the future.
**Dr. Koros:** Thank you for having me. We are excited for what lies ahead!
