ZUTPHEN – Gelre sleep center is accredited by the Sleep Medicine Association of the Netherlands (SVNL). At the end of June 2024, this national organization tested whether the sleep care offered by the sleep center in Gelre hospitals meets specific strict quality requirements for sleep medicine care. The accreditation that has now been officially awarded shows that the Gelre sleep center offers high-quality sleep medicine care to patients with sleep problems.
What are sleep problems?
Sleeping through the night sounds wonderful, but it is not normal for everyone. Snoring, which may also cause disturbed sleep for housemates, fatigue and not waking up rested, can be signs of an underlying sleep problem. This happens a lot. One in five people indicate that they have difficulty falling and/or staying asleep, suffer from fatigue or often wake up earlier than desired. There are different types of sleep problems, such as sleep apnea, insomnia, excessive sleepiness, sleep rhythm disorders and strange movements during sleep.
What care does Gelre Sleep Center offer?
The various healthcare providers at Gelre Sleep Center have undergone specific training in sleep medicine and are European certified for this. In Gelre Sleep Center, physician-somnologists from the disciplines of Neurology, Pulmonary Medicine, Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), Oral Surgery and Psychology work closely together to provide the best sleep care. They do not do this alone, but in collaboration with the sleep lab technicians from the Biometrics research department. These somnotechnologists conduct sleep studies to assess the possible cause of the sleep problem that someone is experiencing. For example, monitoring sleep with measuring equipment. This sometimes has to be done in the hospital, but can often also be done at home. The results from these studies are discussed by the various doctors in a joint consultation. Together they determine the cause of the sleep problem and the best possible treatment options, which are then discussed with the patient.
What does this accreditation mean for Gelre?
“Receiving this accreditation emphasizes that our team of secretaries, laboratory technicians, sleep apnea consultants and doctors provide top care to people with sleep problems in the Apeldoorn and Zutphen region and beyond. This recognition does not mean that we have finished further developing in sleep care, but confirms that we already work very well together to provide the best care to people from our sleep center. And we are proud of that!” says Paul Bienfait, medical head of and involved as a neurologist-somnologist at Gelre Sleep Center.
