The Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt reopened with a gala on Friday evening. The Tonkunstler Orchestra of Lower Austria, Ina Regen and tenor Andreas Schager could be heard. Lidia Baich played Mozart‘s original Costa violin. The year-long renovation was completed on the venue’s 230th anniversary. “With the reopening of this house, we are opening a new chapter in the cultural region of Lower Austria,” said Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP).
Conducted by Lorenz C. Aichner, the Tonkunstler Niederösterreich played together with Baich, among other things, the Rondo for violin and orchestra in C major. Accompanied by the orchestra, Ina Regen sang songs such as “Was ma heut net Traumen” and tenor Andreas Schager, among others, “Nessun Dorma” from “Turandot” or “Yours is my whole heart” by Franz Lehár.
The venue with managing director Maria Großbauer “should become a fixture for spoken theatre, music and cinema and thus an important cornerstone of the cultural offering in the entire region,” said the state governor. According to a press release, Mikl-Leitner emphasized that the Stadttheater Wiener Neustadt had not only created optimal conditions for a strong cultural region in the south of Lower Austria: “Above all, we have managed to create more space and space for the freedom of art.” Culture has been a focus in the city in recent years, said Mayor Klaus Schneeberger (ÖVP).
The renovation work began in 2021 and the cost was 14.5 million euros. The work included the partial renovation of the city theater building, the reorganization of the foyer and the audience area, technically necessary renovations to the stage technology and measures to improve the room acoustics.
With the reopening, the city theater will be integrated into the NÖKU group (NÖ Kulturwirtschaft GesmbH). The future program will include performances by the Tonkunstler Orchestra of Lower Austria, performances by the State Theater of Lower Austria and the cinema in the Kesselhaus Krems. In addition, concerts with music from a wide range of genres, cabaret as well as discussion and introductory events will be offered.
After the opening weekend, the new city theater can be visited at open days. Visitors can get an impression on November 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on November 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
