Serres: coliform bacteria were found in the water of three villages

The finding of total coliforms in the water of three villages in Serres is disturbing.

The finding of total coliforms in the water of three villages of the municipality of Amfipoli in Serres may be due to poor maintenance of the network, with the deputy mayor of Public Health – Social Care and doctor Ilias Papageorgiou clarifying that there are no indications of waste products.

After a standard water analysis at the end of October -which is carried out 3-4 times a year-, the presence of the indicative parameter total coliforms in the water of the settlements of Kormista, Krinida and Kerdyllia was found, while the necessary chlorination actions have already been taken, the deputy mayor said , according to Thesstoday.gr.

The Municipality of Serres issued a notice informing the citizens of the three villages not to use the water for drinking and cooking, but only for any other domestic use.

“The water has no Ecoli and Enterococcus either, which indicate faeces, but total coliforms, which means the water is suspect. However, even total coliforms can cause gastrointestinal problems in susceptible groups”, according to Ilias Papageorgiou.

On Monday (11.11.2024) special echelons will carry out a new sampling of the water, in order to examine whether it is suitable for drinking and cooking.

“It could be that the network is poorly maintained, or a leaf has fallen, or even not a good measurement, as a price is indicative. In any case, we are following the instructions of the Directorate of Public Health PE of Serres and we hope on Monday, in the new sampling, that everything will go well”, noted the deputy mayor.

**Interview with Dr. Ilias Papageorgiou, Deputy Mayor ‌of Public Health – Social Care, Municipality of Amfipoli**

**Editor:** Thank you for joining ‌us today, ‌Dr. Papageorgiou. The recent findings of total coliforms in the water supplies of Kormista, Krinida, and Kerdyllia have raised concerns among residents. Can you explain what total coliforms are and why their‌ presence is significant?

**Dr. Papageorgiou:** Thank you for ⁣having me. Total coliforms are a group of bacteria found in the environment, including soil and ‌vegetation, as well as in⁢ the intestines of warm-blooded animals and humans. Their presence in drinking water is used as an ‍indicator of potential contamination. While total ⁤coliforms themselves are not necessarily⁢ harmful, their⁢ detection suggests that there may be a pathway for pathogens to enter the water supply.

**Editor:** What might have caused this contamination in the water of‌ these villages?

**Dr. Papageorgiou:** We believe the findings are likely⁢ due to poor maintenance of the water distribution network rather than direct contamination from waste products. Our infrastructure ⁣may need some⁤ upkeep, and ⁣we are assessing the systems to ensure they are functioning properly.

**Editor:** You mentioned that there are no indications of E. coli or Enterococcus, which is reassuring. What steps has the municipality taken to⁣ ensure the safety of the‌ residents?

**Dr. Papageorgiou:** Following the⁤ water analysis, we have ‌implemented chlorination measures to⁤ treat the water. Additionally, we have advised residents to refrain from using ‌the water for ‍drinking or ⁤cooking, though it is still safe for other domestic uses. We are committed to monitoring the⁢ situation closely and will conduct⁢ further⁢ testing.

**Editor:** What advice do you have for⁢ residents while this situation is being resolved?

**Dr. Papageorgiou:** I urge residents to adhere to the guidelines provided by the municipality regarding water use. It’s vital to remain informed and avoid using⁣ the water ‍for consumption until we can guarantee its safety. We are working diligently to restore clean drinking water to our communities.

**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Papageorgiou, ⁤for your insights and for taking‍ the⁢ necessary ‌actions to ‌resolve this issue.

**Dr. Papageorgiou:** Thank you for bringing attention to ‌this important matter. ‍We appreciate ⁣the community’s understanding and support as we work⁣ through these ‌challenges.
