The “Madney” family is expanding in a significant and exciting way.
On the latest episode of 9-1-1, aired on Thursday, Maddie (portrayed by Jennifer Love Hewitt) made a heartfelt announcement to her husband Chimney (played by Kenneth Choi), revealing that she is expecting their second child. This news brings a mix of joy and anxiety for Chimney, who is preparing for the challenges of becoming a father of two.
After passionately caring for Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen’s (Tracie Thoms) foster daughter, Mara (Askyler Bell), Chimney is thrilled at the prospect of Jee-Yun, their beloved daughter, having a sibling to share her life with. However, memories of Maddie’s previous pregnancy loom large for him. During that time, Maddie experienced severe postpartum depression, which led her to retreat from her family and responsibilities for six long months. (Interestingly, in real life, Hewitt took maternity leave after welcoming her third child with husband Brian Hallisay, who coincidentally plays her abusive ex-husband Doug in 9-1-1.)

In a poignant final scene of season 8, episode 6, aptly titled “Confessions,” Chimney candidly expresses his fears regarding the upcoming addition to their family, establishing some essential guidelines: “If you’re ever feeling sad or overwhelmed, you come tell me. And you don’t get to leave or try to manage this all on your own. We have total and complete transparency.” Maddie responds thoughtfully, stating, “We can’t go into this acting like I am broken or a bomb that’s gonna go off any second. Give this a chance to be what it is: joy.” (Could this be hinting at a baby name suggestion?)
With joy on the horizon, we turned to 9-1-1‘s co-creator and showrunner Tim Minear to delve deeper into this touching scene and discuss how this pregnancy journey will differ from Maddie’s last experience.
ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How did you arrive at the decision for Maddie to be pregnant again?
TIM MINEAR: Reflecting on events that may not have been shown during the hiatus [between seasons 7 and 8], I wondered about the impact of having Mara in Maddie and Chimney’s lives. Caring for her was a blessing for them, and certainly a safe haven for Hen and Karen. I believe many fans anticipated potential friction between Hen and Chimney due to having their daughter in their home, but that concept never felt viable to me. Maddie’s desire to expand their family felt like a natural evolution of their narrative.
And why delve directly into pregnancy instead of depicting their attempts to conceive?
Interestingly enough, that scene originally featured Chimney laying down rules: “I have some rules. You don’t get to run away. You don’t get to deal with being sad on your own.” However, Jennifer Love Hewitt reached out to me with an insightful suggestion. She said, “I think Maddie should have a rule too.” Her input, which stated that Chimney shouldn’t treat her as if she is broken, added depth to the characters and laid a solid foundation for their story’s progression.
