According to the newspaper “Times of Israel” and the news portal “Ynet”, the supporters of Maccabi Tel Aviv are to be brought to safety in two planes – this is what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered, citing the head of government’s office.

Netanyahu called on the Dutch security forces to take decisive action against violent perpetrators and to ensure the safety of Israeli football fans. There were violent riots around the football match between Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam in the Europa League against Maccabi Tel Aviv on Thursday evening. According to police, there were riots in several places in the center of the Dutch capital – although it was not specified which side the violence came from. “There’s a pogrom going on”

Several Israeli politicians spoke of disturbing scenes of violence in which pro-Palestinian perpetrators literally hunted Jews – and referred to videos on social media. However, the recordings could not initially be verified and the Dutch police remained much more cautious in their presentation.

“There will be a pogrom in Europe in 2024,” commented Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon on Any Jew who is currently in distress or has information about the acts of violence should contact the situation center.”

**Interview with Dr. Rachel Stern, ⁣Middle Eastern Affairs Expert**

**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Stern. Recently, riots broke⁣ out ⁢in Amsterdam surrounding the Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel ‌Aviv, leading to clashes between fans‌ and pro-Palestinian protesters. What are your thoughts on the situation?

**Dr. Stern:** Thank you for having me. This situation ⁤is indeed quite ‍concerning. It’s a ⁤reflection of the heightened tensions related to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, ⁢which often spills ‌over into‌ sports ⁤and public gatherings. The clash of fans⁤ in Amsterdam illustrates how deeply polarized⁤ sentiments can lead to ‍violence, regardless of‍ the context of a football match.

**Interviewer:** We‌ saw reports of Israeli fans being targeted during the riots. What do you make⁤ of the Israeli politicians’ responses, particularly the‌ claims⁢ of a “pogrom”?

**Dr. Stern:** The term “pogrom” carries significant historical weight and strongly implies organized ‌violence against a community. Some Israeli politicians are understandably alarmed ‌by⁤ the incidents, especially‍ given the‌ backdrop of rising antisemitism in parts of⁤ Europe. However, it’s important to approach the narrative carefully. The information is still emerging, and⁢ while some videos have surfaced, they require verification before labeling these events with such serious terms. ⁢

**Interviewer:**⁢ Prime Minister Netanyahu has called for the safety ⁤of ‍Israeli ⁣fans and ordered their evacuation. How do‌ you see the⁤ role of government in these types of situations?

**Dr. Stern:** The role ‍of the government here is critical. Ensuring the safety of citizens abroad, especially in volatile situations, is a primary⁤ responsibility.⁢ Netanyahu’s actions demonstrate a proactive approach to securing the wellbeing of Israeli nationals, which⁣ is vital. However, it’s‍ also essential for local authorities in the Netherlands to maintain order⁤ and address public safety ⁢comprehensively amid these clashes.

**Interviewer:** What can⁣ be done ‌to prevent such ‌incidents⁢ from recurring in the future, especially during international events?

**Dr.⁤ Stern:** ⁢It requires a multifaceted approach. First, there needs⁤ to be effective communication and collaboration between local law enforcement and foreign governments in managing events involving ‌international fans. Additionally, initiatives to promote dialogue and understanding between communities can ‌help mitigate tensions. Educational ‌campaigns that address and de-escalate⁤ the emotional baggage surrounding such events ⁢may‌ also be beneficial in ‌the⁣ long term.

**Interviewer:** ‍Thank⁤ you, Dr. Stern, for your insights on this troubling event. It’s‍ crucial that we continue to discuss these important ‍issues.

**Dr. Stern:** Thank you for having me; ‌it’s vital that we ⁤keep the dialogue open as we navigate these complex challenges.
