In a concerning turn of events, Chicago police confirmed that two individuals were apprehended and face misdemeanor charges for allegedly using fictitious names to gain access to a private event organized by the Chicago Jewish Alliance.
The event, which highlights the insights of Yoseph Haddad—a prominent Israeli Arab and staunch advocate for Israel who suffered injuries during his service in the Israeli Defense Forces—attracted widespread protests. Notably, this military service is not mandatory for Arab citizens of Israel. The demonstrations were orchestrated by multiple organizations, including Students for Justice in Palestine and the US Palestinian Community Network, led by the president of the Chicago Loop Synagogue.
Lee Zoldan, the president of the synagogue, emphasized the rigorous vetting process for event attendees, with over 200 people screened by officials from the Israeli Consulate prior to the gathering. However, she expressed concern that some individuals improperly registered with false identities, suggesting that these individuals might have disclosed the event’s timing and venue to the protesting groups.
Approximately thirty minutes before the event was scheduled to commence, a group of around thirty protestors appeared outside the synagogue, some displaying a banner for Students for Justice in Palestine. They were later joined by additional demonstrators, including members from the US Palestinian Community Network and legal representatives from the National Lawyers Guild.
As the situation escalated outside, two attendees who had infiltrated the event began to shout from within the synagogue’s sanctuary, prompting Zoldan to call law enforcement for assistance.
According to Chicago police reports, a 19-year-old male is facing a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespass, while a 20-year-old individual has been charged with both criminal trespass and criminal damage to property, categorized as misdemeanors.
