The Israeli army carries out regular attacks throughout the West Bank which have increased since the start of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023. Palestinians have also been violently attacked by illegal Israeli settlers.
At least 777 Palestinians have been killed and more than 6,300 injured as a result of Israeli military fire in the occupied territories, according to the Health Ministry.
The escalation of tensions follows a landmark opinion in July by the International Court of Justice that declared Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian land illegal and demanded the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. (Ant/Z-2)

**Interview with Dr. Miriam Cohen, Middle East Analyst**
**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Cohen. Israel has recently launched a significant military operation in the West Bank, particularly in Jenin. What can you tell us about the current situation?
**Dr. Cohen:** Thank you for having me. The situation in Jenin is extremely tense. The Israeli military’s operation is being described as an effort to root out militants, particularly in response to escalating violence in the region. Eyewitness accounts suggest that troops entered the city from multiple directions, accompanied by significant equipment, including bulldozers that are damaging infrastructure. This military action is prompting fears among Palestinians that it could lead to further escalation of the conflict.
**Interviewer:** What are the broader implications of this operation for Israeli-Palestinian relations?
**Dr. Cohen:** The implications could be severe. Palestinians see these military operations as part of a larger strategy that includes expansion and potential displacement. While Israel argues it’s acting out of security needs, many Palestinians and international observers are increasingly concerned about the cycle of violence and the humanitarian impact on civilian lives. This ongoing conflict will likely complicate prospects for peace and exacerbate tensions further.
**Interviewer:** We’ve seen global reactions to such events in the past. How might the international community respond to these developments?
**Dr. Cohen:** International reactions can vary widely. Some countries may condemn the military actions and call for restraint, while others might support Israel’s right to defend itself against perceived threats. The effectiveness of international diplomacy may be tested, given the sensitive nature of the conflict and the historical context. There are already calls from various human rights organizations urging for accountability and the protection of civilians in these operations.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Cohen, for shedding light on this complex and evolving situation.
**Dr. Cohen:** You’re welcome. Let’s hope for a peaceful resolution soon.
