**Interview with Dr. Amina Shah, Security Analyst specializing in China-Pakistan relations**
**Interviewer:** Dr. Shah, thank you for joining us today. Recent reports have highlighted the growing security risks for Chinese nationals working in Pakistan, especially in light of recent attacks. What are your thoughts on this escalation of violence?
**Dr. Shah:** Thank you for having me. It’s indeed concerning. The attacks on Chinese workers, including the tragic incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Karachi, indicate a troubling trend. These incidents not only jeopardize the safety of foreign nationals but also threaten the broader ambitions of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which relies on a stable environment for successful implementation.
**Interviewer:** The Pakistani government is now discussing a joint security strategy with China. How effective do you think this collaboration will be?
**Dr. Shah:** While a joint security strategy is a necessary step, its effectiveness largely depends on the commitment and resources allocated by both sides. Pakistan faces significant internal security challenges, particularly in regions like Balochistan. The success of this strategy will require more than just discussions; it will require actionable plans and real-time cooperation on law enforcement and intelligence-sharing.
**Interviewer:** There appears to be a strong commitment from both governments despite these risks. What does this indicate about the future of CPEC and China-Pakistan relations?
**Dr. Shah:** The commitment reflects the strategic importance both countries place on CPEC. For China, it’s a key part of its Belt and Road Initiative, and for Pakistan, it offers much-needed economic development opportunities. However, both nations must address the security challenges head-on. If the situation doesn’t improve, it could lead to a reassessment of economic partnerships and investment levels.
**Interviewer:** In your opinion, what must be prioritized to ensure the safety of Chinese workers and the success of CPEC?
**Dr. Shah:** Firstly, immediate security measures need to be enhanced, especially in areas identified as hotspots. Secondly, there’s a need for a more significant presence of security personnel at project sites and increased training for local security forces. creating an inclusive dialogue with local communities may help mitigate grievances that contribute to these attacks. Engaging locals will be essential to foster an environment of peace and cooperation.
**Interviewer:** Thank you for those insights, Dr. Shah. It’s a complex situation, but it’s crucial for both nations to navigate these challenges effectively.
**Dr. Shah:** Absolutely, and thank you for having me discuss this important topic.
