Varhelyi now has 24 hours to answer further questions in writing. His hearing will be reassessed on Monday.
The Hungarian should take over the department for health and animal welfare. Previously, Varhelyi was Commissioner for EU Enlargement. He made enemies in parliament when he insulted MPs as “idiots” in front of the microphone in 2023. “I can only repeat that this was not intended for parliament,” he said in his confirmation hearing. “I regret what happened.”
If the MPs do not consider Varhelyi’s written answers to be sufficient, they can reject his candidacy. In this case, Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban would have to nominate a replacement.

**Interview with Olivér Várhelyi: Navigating Challenges in European Politics**
*Interviewer:* Good afternoon, Mr. Várhelyi. Thank you for joining us today. You are currently under scrutiny following some controversial statements made during your previous position as Commissioner for EU Enlargement. Can you elaborate on that experience and how it shapes your approach now?
*Olivér Várhelyi:* Good afternoon, and thank you for having me. The experience I had as Commissioner for EU Enlargement was both challenging and enlightening. It’s important to remember that emotions can run high in political discussions. My remarks were meant to express frustration, but I acknowledge that they were inappropriate. I sincerely regret any offense I caused to members of parliament. Moving forward, I’m committed to fostering respectful and constructive dialogue.
*Interviewer:* You have now been nominated for a new role overseeing health and animal welfare. How do you plan to tackle this new responsibility, especially in light of your past controversies?
*Olivér Várhelyi:* Transitioning to this new role is a significant responsibility. My priority will be to listen to stakeholders, understand their needs, and collaborate with fellow commissioners to address health and welfare issues across the EU. I am aware that I need to regain the trust of my colleagues, and I intend to do so through transparency and dedication.
*Interviewer:* If your written responses to parliament do not meet expectations, there’s a possibility your candidacy could be rejected. How do you prepare for such outcomes?
*Olivér Várhelyi:* While I am focused on providing thorough and satisfactory responses, I recognize that the decision ultimately lies with the parliament. I am preparing my answers carefully and hope to clarify any concerns. However, it’s part of the democratic process, and I respect the authority of parliament to make that decision.
*Interviewer:* Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been a strong supporter of your career. How do you see your relationship with him influencing your work in the EU?
*Olivér Várhelyi:* My relationship with Prime Minister Orbán is primarily based on shared goals for Hungary and the EU. His support has been invaluable, but I also aim to act independently in my role. My focus will be on the collective interests of all member states, not just Hungary.
*Interviewer:* Lastly, what message do you have for your critics as you move forward in your career?
*Olivér Várhelyi:* I appreciate constructive criticism as it is essential for growth. To my critics, I say: I am genuinely committed to improving and learning from past mistakes. Collaboration and open dialogue are key to overcoming challenges, and I invite everyone to join me in this effort.
*Interviewer:* Thank you for your time, Mr. Várhelyi. We look forward to seeing how your journey unfolds in this new role.
*Olivér Várhelyi:* Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts.
