Relatives of young people and adolescents detained in the post-election protests demonstrated outside the Palace of Justice, in Caracas, on Thursday, November 7, to demand full freedom for their relatives.
The protesters are relatives of detainees in Caracas and in the states of Miranda, Carabobo and Barinas. These people argue that the arrests were arbitrary, because they were not made in response to any crime.
Mr. President (Nicolás Maduro), I ask you to move to all those prisons where they are destroying the physical, moral and spiritual health of our boys, they are drying up as you say, but our boys are innocent,” said the mother of one of the detainees.
The protester assured that many of the detainees are young workers and studying university degrees that were suspended due to their arrests. He demanded that the files of the accused be reviewed.
“How do they ask us mothers to have a happy Christmas? I raised my son with values of Christian faith, with Venezuelan roots, that you blame me for terrorism,” he alleged.
The protester explained that the relatives of the detainees are willing to sit at a working table with the Venezuelan authorities to review the cases in detail.
Complaints about prison conditions
The mother of one of the detainees denounced the conditions in which the protesters are held. He assured that young people receive little food in prisons and sometimes they are in poor condition.
Our boys are drying up because the food is little, in many cases it arrives bad. In some prisons there is very little water and the boys only receive three glasses of water. They don’t drink water every day, but there are times when they have a hard time,” he explained.
The Venezuelan Observatory of Prisons (OVP) warned that in the case of detained adolescents there have been violations of the rights established in the Organic Law for the Protection of Boys, Girls and Adolescents (Lopnna) with respect to how the detention of people should be. minors under 18 years of age.
Among the measures contemplated by the law is the obligation for them to be in prisons other than those of adults. Adolescents should also be allowed to continue their educational training while incarcerated.
During the demonstration, the mothers of the detainees said a prayer to ask for the release of their children and for the cases of each of the young people and adolescents deprived of liberty to be clarified.

The protesters in Caracas, specifically mothers of detainees, voiced their concerns regarding their children who have been arrested during recent protests. They highlighted that many of these young detainees are students who had to pause their university education due to their arrests. The mothers are demanding a review of their children’s cases, questioning how the authorities can expect them to have a joyful Christmas while their sons are accused of terrorism.
Additionally, the mothers expressed a willingness to meet with Venezuelan officials to discuss the charges against their children and to ensure that their cases are assessed fairly. One mother reported that the conditions within the prisons are dire, with inadequate food and water provided to the young detainees, leading to deteriorating health. The Venezuelan Prisons Observatory has pointed out that the treatment of detained adolescents often violates laws designed to protect the rights of minors.
During the demonstration, the mothers prayed for their children’s freedom and for justice regarding the cases of all young people currently held in custody. The overall sentiment was one of desperation for better treatment of their loved ones and a call for awareness regarding the situation of political prisoners in Venezuela.
