Michael McMonagle: A Cautionary Tale from Derry
So, here we are folks, gathered around the digital campfire, talking about the latest in courtroom drama from Derry. Michael McMonagle, former Sinn Féin press officer, is rightfully getting the spotlight… though it’s not the kind you want in a career of public service. Instead of speeches, we’re seeing a sentence looming over him like a bad hangover after a night of regrettable decisions.
Yes, the man has pled guilty to a whole tangle of offenses that you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy—or even your most annoying colleague who steals your lunch at work. We’re talking about inciting a child into sexual activity. Not exactly what you could call a PR victory, is it?
Now, just to set the stage, McMonagle initially faced 15 charges, including 13 counts of attempted sexual communication with a child. It’s like a horror film, folks, where each act is more shocking than the last. His offenses spanned dates between May 2020 and August 2021, which is a nice way of saying there was a lot of time for this sort of behavior to fester, like that fruit cake your aunt keeps re-gifting every Christmas.
At his first court appearance, it was three charges, but oh no—by the end of it, he’s racked up more offenses than a teenager at a weekend party. Not a happy ending there, folks—unless you consider being put on the Sex Offenders Register a happy ending. Honestly, it makes you wonder if he thought he was writing his autobiography, “How to Get Yourself on Every Possible Registry.”
And let’s discuss Sinn Féin’s reaction. They’ve claimed to have suspended McMonagle as soon as they caught wind of the police investigation, like a hapless magician who realizes he still has the rabbit in his hat when he’s supposed to be pulling a bouquet of flowers. His stint with the Assembly ended in July 2022, but good ol’ McMonagle had no trouble landing a gig with the British Heart Foundation. Yes, the charity that’s literally on a mission to save lives had no idea they were hiring someone with a dark past. That’s like inviting Dracula to run your blood bank while you’re out for a long weekend.
And here’s the cherry on top of the rather grotesque sundae: two former Sinn Féin press officers provided references for him in 2022. The mind boggles! Did they think, “Oh, he looks like he’d be smashing at helping with the charity’s PR—what could possibly go wrong?” Spoiler alert: a lot.
So there we have it, dear readers. This is the kind of story that stings but serves as a stark reminder to be vigilant about who we trust. And as McMonagle awaits his sentencing at Derry Crown Court, one can only ponder if there’s a lesson here—preferably one taught by someone with a far better moral compass than our ill-fated press officer. Remember, folks, just because someone can communicate well doesn’t mean they should be given the trust of those most vulnerable in our society.
“In the world of PR, some messages are better left unsent.” – Just trying to be insightful here!
Stay sharp out there, and keep those heartstrings intact.

McMonagle (42), residing on Limewood Street in Derry, has admitted to multiple offences, including the alarming attempt to incite a child to engage in sexual activity.
He was initially charged with 15 serious offences, which included attempts to incite two children into sexual activities.
In addition, he faced 13 counts relating to attempted sexual communications with minors.
The criminal activities occurred over a span of time between May 2020 and August 2021.

Upon notification of the police investigation, Sinn Féin acted promptly and suspended him from his position; his official employment ended in July 2022.
Subsequently, McMonagle obtained a position with the British Heart Foundation (BHF), which was unaware of his ongoing police investigation involving these serious child sex offences.
It later came to light that two former Sinn Féin press officers provided references for him when he applied for the BHF role.
Beginning his tenure at the BHF in September 2022, McMonagle continued until July 2023, when the charity became aware of the serious criminal charges he was facing.
