The central government of India has summoned a Canadian diplomat to the Ministry of External Affairs in response to allegations that Home Minister Amit Shah had set up a spy network in Canada.
The Modi government said on Saturday that Canadian officials had deliberately leaked information to the international media about the baseless allegations so that India would be discredited around the world.
The Indian government also says that the accusation against Home Minister Amit Shah of setting up a spy network in Canada is completely baseless and absurd. A representative of the Canadian High Commission was summoned and a letter of protest was sent to him.
Addressing a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that due to the allegations leveled by Canada against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, we have summoned the Canadian diplomat and protested to him.
In the protest letter, it is written that the allegations made by the Deputy Minister of Defense of Canada, David Morrison, against Indian Home Minister Amit Shah are baseless.
Two senior Canadian officials recently admitted to giving some sensitive information against India to the American newspaper Washington Post.
This information was given before the Canadian government said that Indian agents were involved in the killing of Canadian Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nagar.
India has also strongly condemned the strict surveillance of its consular and charge d’affaires in Canada.
The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that such measures will create more tension in bilateral relations and worsen the situation.

**Interview with Dr. Meera Kapoor, International Relations Expert**
**Interviewer:** Good evening, Dr. Kapoor. Thank you for joining us today. Let’s dive right into the recent tensions between India and Canada. The Indian government has summoned a Canadian diplomat over allegations related to Home Minister Amit Shah. Can you provide us with your insights on this development?
**Dr. Kapoor:** Good evening, and thank you for having me. This situation is quite significant as it highlights the deteriorating relationship between India and Canada. The Indian government’s swift action in summoning a Canadian diplomat is a clear indication of the seriousness with which they are treating these allegations. It’s also a signal to both domestic and international audiences that India is not willing to tolerate what they perceive as unfounded accusations.
**Interviewer:** The Modi government has labeled the allegations of a spy network as “baseless and absurd.” How might this positioning impact India’s diplomatic relations with Canada moving forward?
**Dr. Kapoor:** By categorically denying the allegations and labeling them as absurd, the Indian government is trying to assert its dignity and credibility on the global stage. However, this could escalate tensions further if both sides do not approach the situation carefully. If such diplomatic exchanges turn hostile, it may lead to strained relations that could affect trade, cultural exchanges, and cooperation on various global issues.
**Interviewer:** Canada has been accused of leaking information to international media. What implications could this have for Canada’s diplomatic stance regarding its relations with India?
**Dr. Kapoor:** If Canada is seen as using media to leverage political pressure against India, it could damage its standing as a neutral mediator in international affairs. Canada’s reputation for maintaining diplomatic norms could be at stake, as it must balance its domestic and international interests, especially with regard to its Sikh population and their concerns regarding issues in India.
**Interviewer:** Lastly, what steps do you think both countries should consider taking to de-escalate the situation?
**Dr. Kapoor:** Open dialogue is crucial. Both nations need to establish communication channels that can help clarify intentions and address concerns before they escalate. Perhaps involving third-party mediators or employing track two diplomacy could facilitate a better understanding. It’s essential for both countries to recognize the mutual benefits of cooperation rather than allowing singular incidents to derail their broader relationship.
**Interviewer:** Thank you, Dr. Kapoor, for sharing your expert insights on this important diplomatic issue.
**Dr. Kapoor:** Thank you for having me. It’s always a pleasure to discuss international relations and the complexities they involve.
