Printed books that have been written off and are suitable for further use may be transferred to the ownership of natural and legal persons free of charge in accordance with the principles established in the Law on the Management, Use and Disposal of State and Municipal Property and the rules of professional activity and ethics of employees of cultural institutions. By the way, the library‘s ownership marks on the transferred written-off printed books are not removed, and all selected printed books handed over to individuals or legal entities are marked with the stamps “written-off” and “given to individuals”.
The books given by the Lithuanian National Library of Martynas Mažvydas are a variety of fiction in the Lithuanian language by Lithuanian and foreign authors. We invite everyone who wants to add to their personal library or give new life to books, come to the library and choose what interests them.
Book drop-off will take place from November 14th until the books are distributed, but no later than December 13th. During the working hours of the National Library at Gedimino pr. 51, Vilnius. The selected books will be delivered on the second floor (between the main entrance and the cafe).
We would like to point out that the National Library is not responsible for the actions of natural and legal persons using the books written by the library transferred to their ownership.
Library books can be given to residents only after completing all the procedures related to the withdrawal established by legal acts. With Library fund protection regulationswhich establish the procedure for giving “second life” to written-off books, you can familiarize yourself with it here.

**Interview with Dr. Janina Karpova, Head Librarian at the Lithuanian National Library of Martynas Mažvydas**
**Editor:** Thank you for joining us today, Dr. Karpova. The Lithuanian National Library has recently made an initiative to transfer written-off printed books. Can you tell us more about this program?
**Dr. Karpova:** Thank you for having me! Yes, we are excited about this initiative. Our library has a collection of printed materials that, while no longer part of our active collection, are still valuable and suitable for further use. Under the regulations provided by the Law on the Management, Use and Disposal of State and Municipal Property, we are able to transfer these books to anyone who is interested, completely free of charge.
**Editor:** That sounds fantastic! What kind of books can people expect to find through this program?
**Dr. Karpova:** The selection includes a diverse array of fiction in the Lithuanian language, authored by both Lithuanian and foreign writers. There are classic novels, contemporary literature, and a variety of genres. It’s a wonderful opportunity for anyone looking to enrich their personal library or even discover new literary favorites.
**Editor:** Are there any conditions that individuals or organizations need to be aware of when taking these books?
**Dr. Karpova:** Yes, it’s important to note that all of these transferred books will retain their library ownership marks. They will carry stamps indicating that they have been ‘written-off’ and ‘given to individuals.’ This is part of our commitment to transparency and adherence to professional ethics in cultural institutions.
**Editor:** How can interested individuals participate in this program?
**Dr. Karpova:** We encourage everyone to visit the library! Our staff will be more than happy to help you select the books that interest you. Whether you’re looking to expand your own reading list or want to give these books a new life through someone else’s hands, we invite you to come down and explore what we have available.
**Editor:** Thank you, Dr. Karpova. This sounds like a wonderful initiative for both book lovers and the community!
**Dr. Karpova:** Thank you for the opportunity to share this with your audience! We hope to see many people visiting the library soon.
