Born almost a decade before the world’s first Miss Universe pageant in 1952, Choi Soon-hwa is keen to make new history.
An 80-year-old woman wants to set a record as the oldest woman to participate in the Miss Universe pageant.
In early September 2024, Choi Soon’s name was revealed as a finalist for the Miss Universe Korea pageant.
There she wants to compete with 31 other women to participate in the Miss Universe beauty pageant on behalf of South Korea.
The pageant is scheduled for November 2024 in Mexico.
She said in an interview that ‘I want to stun the world so that it is forced to think how an 80-year-old woman can be so healthy? How did he take care of himself? What is his diet?’
She said, ‘When you get old, body weight increases, so I want to prove that you can live a healthy life even as you get older’.
For decades, only women between the ages of 18 and 28 were allowed to participate in the Miss Universe pageant, but starting in 2024, the upper age limit has been lifted.
Similarly, the ban on participation of pregnant women or mothers in 2023 was also lifted.
According to Choi Soon, ‘Now that the age restriction has been lifted, I thought I’d give it a try and see if I progress or not, but I’m determined to take advantage of this opportunity.’
40-year-old Beatrice Njoya from Malta has won the honor of representing her country.
Thus, if Choi Soon fails, she will be the oldest woman to compete in Miss Universe.
