Bruce Dickinson’s Bold Plan for Iron Maiden’s Future
Ah, Iron Maiden. The legendary English metal band that has been sending shockwaves through our eardrums since 1975! And yet here we are, faced with the shocking news that the voice behind that unmistakably powerful sound, Bruce Dickinson, actually considered snacking on a giant slice of the band’s pizza! No, wait! I meant to say he thought about leaving, should circumstances dictate, like—oh, I don’t know—getting diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014! Yikes! Do you think they’d let him take a sabbatical? Or better yet, maybe a permanent holiday on the beach with a piña colada?
But as it turns out, Dickinson faced his demons and emerged stronger than a metal head at a mosh pit. After that little hiccup known as cancer, he’s now preparing to raise the iron flag high once more with a 50th anniversary tour in 2025! Quite a comeback story, don’t you think? Almost as good as when I found out I aired my socks on the washing line instead of my clean laundry.
Bruce Dickinson: Metal’s Legitimized Replacement Plan
During an interview on the Rich Roll podcast, Dickinson revealed something that could send tremors through every heavy metal fan—he pondered on the idea of a “replacement.” If he didn’t get the “totes calm, mate” from his throat, he’d offer his sage guidance in picking a new frontman! Now that’s a true team player. He saw darkness where I see only double entendres!
Imagine hearing his thoughts: “When I got throat cancer, the last thing on my mind was the possibility of singing again!” Really? Because I was under the impression your mind was primarily occupied with thoughts of epic drum solos and Eddie, the legendary mascot, chasing after you with a head of cabbage. But Dickinson being Dickinson, he pivoted the conversation to ensure the “sacred music” would be represented even if it wasn’t by him. “If I didn’t sing properly for Iron Maiden, I would help them find someone who could.” What a champ! Only he could turn a life-threatening diagnosis into a recruitment drive for the next hot rock star!
And thank goodness he survived! Who else could possibly belt out classics like “The Trooper”? Edward from Twilight? Sorry, Robert Pattinson; you can’t just sparkle and get away with it. Not where Maiden’s concerned!

The Iron Maiden singer expressed his thoughts about leaving the band while actively seeking a worthy successor.
Throughout their illustrious career, Iron Maiden has seen several vocalists come and go. However, for countless fans, the quintessential voice that epitomizes the legendary English metal band is undoubtedly Bruce Dickinson.
In light of his past health struggles, Dickinson shared that following his throat cancer diagnosis in 2014, he was emotionally prepared to assist the band in finding a replacement should any serious complications arise.
Despite overcoming the illness with remarkable resilience, emerging stronger than before, and gearing up for an exhilarating 50th anniversary tour in 2025, he candidly admitted that there was a poignant moment when he truly feared no longer fulfilling his role as the band’s lead singer.
Bruce Dickinson and the potential for a new voice in Iron Maiden
In 2014, Bruce Dickinson was confronted with a daunting throat cancer diagnosis, a revelation that could have plunged anyone into despair—even a battle-hardened artist like himself.
During a recent discussion on the Rich Roll podcast, Dickinson conveyed his readiness to confront the possibility of never performing again following his diagnosis.
“When I got throat cancer, the last thing on my mind was the possibility of singing again,” he recounted. “Survival was my foremost concern, and singing was far from my thoughts. However, I reassured myself that if I made it through, I would return to the stage and give singing another shot.”
Yet, the gravity of his situation meant that some matters felt beyond his control, leading him to question whether he might ever recapture his former vocal prowess. “I thought, ‘I might manage to sing, but perhaps in a different way.’ Still, I promised myself that if I could not sing at the level required for Iron Maiden, I would help the band find a phenomenal replacement. Music, for me, is sacred.”
Iron Maiden’s anticipated return to Italy in 2025

Exclusive commemorative tickets featuring the show’s official poster will be available, alongside enticing VIP packages.
In an exciting addition, the fierce and charismatic Swedish metal band Avatar, fronted by Johannes Eckerström, will join as special guests for this significant date.
Radiofreccia has been appointed as the official radio partner for the IRON MAIDEN concert.
